House gives final nod on bill seeking 6-year term for barangay, SK officials

MANILA - The House of Representatives gave its final nod to a measure seeking to extend to six years the term of elective Barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan Officials, instead of the current three years.During plenary session on Monday, 153 congressmen voted to approve House Bill 11287 on third and final reading, four voted against it, and one abstained.Under the measure, the synchronized Barangay and SK elections shall be held every six years on the second Monday of May starting in 2029.No elective barangay official shall serve for more than two consecutive terms in the same position, while no elective Sangguniang Kabataan official shall serve for more than one term, according to the bill, principally authored by House Speaker Martin Romualdez and other House leaders.The measure further provides for a transitory provision granting all incumbent Barangay and SK officials elected last October 30, 2023 to remain in office until the next elections on May 2029, unless sooner removed or suspended for cause.Last January 14, the Senate approved on third and final reading Senate Bill 2816, which sets the term of office of elected barangay officials and SK members to four years, with a limit of three consecutive terms in the same position for barangay officials. The bill also states that the next regular barangay and SK elections shall be held on the first Monday of October 2027 and every four years thereafter.
