Bianca Dava, ABS-CBN News</span></span></span></div><p>MANILA — The United States and Japan have agreed to provide assistance and capacity building for the Philippine Coast Guard and other Philippine maritime authorities, the US State Department said this week.</p><p>In a <a href="https://www.state.gov/releases/office-of-the-spokesperson/2025/07/secretary-rubios-meeting-with-japanese-foreign-minister-iwaya-and-philippine-secretary-of-foreign-affairs-lazaro">statement</a> Thursday, US State Department spokesperson Tammy Bruce said Secretary of State Marco Rubio met with Japanese Foreign Minister Iwaya Takeshi and Philippine Secretary of Foreign Affairs Maria Theresa Lazaro during the ASEAN-related Foreign Ministers&#x27; Meetings.  </p><div><a href="https://www.abs-cbn.com/news/nation/2025/7/11/dnd-marks-9th-year-of-arbitral-ruling-on-south-china-sea-dispute-1304">&#x27;The rule of law matters&#x27;: DND marks 9th year of Hague ruling on South China Sea dispute</a></div><p>Bruce said the three reaffirmed their shared interest in trilateral cooperation to &quot;advance a free and open Indo-Pacific.&quot; </p><p>They also agreed to coordinate cooperation on maritime security, trilateral military exercises, and capacity building and assistance for the Philippine Coast Guard and other Philippine maritime authorities, said Bruce.</p><p>Aside from the PCG, the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources also enforces laws against illegal fishing.</p><div><strong>ECONOMIC PARTNERSHIP<br/></strong></div><div><strong></strong></div><p>They also stressed the need to grow their economic partnership by unlocking private sector investment in high-impact infrastructure projects in the Luzon Economic Corridor.  </p><p>Rubio in the meeting highlighted the Philippines&#x27; wealth in critical minerals and stressed the need to diversify critical mineral supply chains, Bruce said.</p><p>They proposed advancing trilateral cooperation in the Philippines on cybersecurity, energy, including civil nuclear energy, and investments in reliable and secure telecommunications networks. </p><p>The officials also agreed to hold sectoral trilateral discussions at the senior officials&#x27; level in the &quot;coming months&quot; to advance their shared desire for peace and security in the region.</p>
