MANILA — The Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) on Thursday said it rescued some 5,000 individuals so far from the widespread flooding caused by tropical cyclones and the southwest monsoon across Metro Manila and parts of Luzon.

PCG spokesperson Capt. Noemie Cayabyab said rescue operations were focused in areas submerged in chest-deep floodwaters, including Valenzuela City, Cavite, Laguna, Bulacan, Bataan, Pampanga, and Pangasinan.

“Umaabot na po hanggang dibdib [ang baha] at meron naman po tayong enough number ng rubber boats at floating assets na tumutulong po hindi lang po sa local government units pati na rin po sa mga apektadong barangay,” Cayabyab told ABS-CBN News.

She said all 16 Coast Guard districts—comprising 6,700 personnel—were placed on full alert, with deployable response groups ready to conduct rescue operations at any time. They were equipped with air assets and radio communications equipment.

Aside from flooding response, Cayabyab said the PCG assisted in preemptive evacuation efforts in vulnerable areas.

She added that the PCG was coordinating with coastal communities and warning fishermen against sailing in rough seas. Three fishermen had gone missing but were later found safe.
