Activists on Monday said they will continue to burn effigies in the 4th State of the Nation Address of President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. despite a warning from the Philippine National Police chief that they would be breaking environmental laws. Bayan president Renato Reyes said the burning of effigies is part of a long tradition of the Philippine protest movement upholding freedom of expression.“Itong sinasabi ng kapulisan, tingin namin ay hindi nakakatulong. Pampagulo lang. Hindi dapat sigurong pansinin pa itong PNP sa kanilang ginagawa,” Reyes said in a DZMM interview. “Walang batayan sa batas ‘yung kanilang sinasabi so tuloy lang,” he added. He pointed out that protesters who burned effigies were declared innocent and all charges dropped.Reyes said progressive groups will continue its counter-SONA, which will tackle the scuttled impeachment trial of Vice President Sara Duterte and the billions spent on flood control, despite possible inclement weather.
