MANILA (UPDATE) — The Manila Police District (MPD) has confirmed that the two foreigners killed in a shooting incident in Malate on Friday night, August 15, were both Japanese nationals.According to authorities, the victims were gunned down by suspects on a motorcycle — a riding-in-tandem — along Malvar Street in Malate, Manila.The fatal shooting occurred just moments after the two victims alighted from a taxi, as seen on CCTV footage from the barangay.Witnesses said there was a brief commotion just before people in the area began to flee in panic.It was during this moment that the two Japanese nationals were shot.“Pagdating po nila ay may nakabulagta nang hindi kilalang dayuhan. Hindi po kilala ‘yong suspek dahil hindi rin po nila naabutan,” said a barangay tanod who was on duty at the time of the incident.The suspects immediately fled the scene on a motorcycle after the attack.A security guard stationed at a nearby building described how quickly the events unfolded.“Pag dalawang putok, pagtingin namin sa kabila, usok na. Nagtakbuhan na ‘yong mga tao diyan. Marami kasing tao kasi operation ng KTV bars ‘yong gano’ng oras,” he said.“‘Yon rin ‘yong kwento sa mga nakakita sa kabilang side sir na mayroong bag na hinila. Kinapkapan pa nga daw,” he added, suggesting that the shooting may have involved a theft.<div> </div><div>JAPANESE EMBASSY</div><div> </div>In a statement, the Japanese Embassy in the Philippines expressed its condolences to the families of the two Japanese nationals killed.“We express our condolences to the deceased and we are currently coordinating and confirming the details of the incident with the Philippine authorities, and are providing support to the bereaved family members of the deceased,” it read.The MPD has launched a follow-up investigation and formed a Special Investigation Task Group (SITG) to focus on the case.The Manila Police District confirmed on Monday that they already have persons of interest in connection with the shooting.
