MANILA (UPDATE) — GCash, the Philippines&#x27; biggest fintech, is set to roll out additional features aimed at promoting responsible online gambling, including self-exclusion options.E-wallets have come under fire for supposedly fueling the addiction of Filipinos by making it easier to access online gambling games. Now, several lawmakers now want to ban e-wallets from having direct links to online gambling apps and online gambling promotions.“Users will now be allowed to actually restrict their ability to engage in gaming activities temporarily or permanently. They have the ability to set up their own top-up limits, in terms of amounts and frequency,” said Globe Chief Financial Officer, Treasurer and Chief Risk Officer Carlo Puno during a virtual briefing on Wednesday.Other features being planned out include additional notifications or reminders about responsible gambling upon entry to G-Life, the one-stop shop for online services on the app, and when clicking on gaming merchants.“If in the past, it took you three clicks to get to the website of the gaming merchants, it will now take you five clicks. So there is some additional friction to go into the websites of the gaming merchants,” said Puno.In the meantime, Puno insisted that “proper controls” are already in place on the app to prevent minors from engaging in online gambling.“Anyone under 21, we bar them from participating in any of the licensed gaming. So this is very much consistent with PAGCOR (Philippine Amusement and Gaming Corporation) rules,” he noted.The fintech giant also said it is compliant with and supports the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas&#x27; regulations on online gambling. The BSP on Thursday said it will <a href="https://www.abs-cbn.com/news/business/2025/8/7/bangko-sentral-to-impose-stricter-rules-on-banks-e-wallets-vs-online-gambling-1440" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">impose stricter rules</a> on banks and e-wallets that will help protect Filipinos against the dangers of online gambling.
