MANILA (UPDATED) — Presidential Communications Office Undersecretary Claire Castro arrived at the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) Tuesday afternoon to report alleged death threats made against her through Facebook posts.The posts were allegedly made on Luminous by Trixie Cruz-Angeles and Amet Paglinawan, which she said contained statements implying severe physical harm and posed a serious threat to her life.“Kailangan ko itong i-report dahil kung may mangyari man sa akin, may nakarecord na kung sino ang mga nagpapakalat ng ganitong klaseng pagbabanta,” Castro said. She added that she personally knows only Cruz-Angeles and not Paglinawan, but noted that the Facebook account appeared to carry both names. Castro admitted the post frightened her, saying, “Hindi ako sanay sa death threats… malinaw na may pagbabanta sa buhay.” She emphasized that freedom of expression should not cross into threats or violence, adding that she has yet to decide whether to file formal charges.NBI spokesperson Palmer Mallari said Castro followed the proper procedure by putting the alleged threat on record, explaining that a blotter serves as a reference point should the threat later materialize. “Importante na maitala muna ang banta dahil ito ang magiging reference point ng mga imbestigador kung sakaling magkatotoo ang pagbabanta,” Mallari said.Mallari added that the NBI’s cybercrime division can authenticate and preserve the Facebook post as evidence, even if it is later deleted. “Kahit mabura pa sa social media ang post, kapag naitala na ito, mayroon na tayong kopya at datos tulad ng petsa, oras, at detalye ng account,” he said, noting that the account involved appears to be an established or “admitted” account, making it easier for authorities to identify who maintains and uses it should a full investigation proceed.
