Mark Balmores, PPA pool</span></span></span></div><div><br/></div><div><br/></div><p>MANILA <strong>(UPDATE)</strong> — The verified <a href="https://www.abs-cbn.com/news/nation/2026/1/19/marcos-impeachment-complaint-1004">impeachment complaint</a> against President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. has been transmitted to the Office of the House Speaker, according to House Secretary General Cheloy Garafil on Wednesday.</p><p>The complaint filed on Monday by lawyer Andre de Jesus and endorsed by Pusong Pinoy Party List Representative Jett Nisay reached the Office of the Speaker on Tuesday.</p><p>“Pursuant to established procedure, the Office of the Secretary General has transmitted the verified impeachment complaint to the Office of Speaker Faustino ‘Bojie’ G. Dy III for appropriate action,” Garafil said.</p><p>Garafil noted that her office’s role was “administrative and guided strictly by the Constitution, House rules and long-standing protocol.”</p><p>Upon receipt of any impeachment complaint, the Office of the Secretary General ensures that the document is properly entered, recorded and forwarded to the proper office — an initial step “meant to preserve order and due process, Garafil explained.</p><div><a href="https://www.abs-cbn.com/news/nation/2026/1/20/-walang-ginawang-mali-palace-says-marcos-unbothered-with-impeachment-complaint-1639">‘Walang ginawang mali’: Palace says Marcos unbothered with impeachment complaint</a></div><p>The House Speaker has 10 days from receipt to include the verified impeachment complaint in the Order of Business of the lower chamber. It shall be referred to the House Committee on Justice within three session days after.</p><p>The first impeachment complaint against Marcos was filed earlier this week for alleged graft and corruption, culpable violation of the Constitution, and betrayal of public trust.</p><div><br/></div><div><strong>DIVERSION?</strong></div><div><br/></div><p>Davao City First District Rep. Paolo Duterte tagged the impeachment complaint against the President a “drama” meant to “divert attention” from alleged corruption in the government.</p><p>“Enough of the deception. While the public is being drowned in a half-baked impeachment case, the real scandals — the ones involving power, money, and blood ties — are being deliberately kept out of reach,” he said in a social media post.</p><div><a href="https://www.abs-cbn.com/news/nation/2026/1/19/palace-congtractor-behind-endorsement-of-impeachment-complaint-vs-marcos-jr-1659">Palace: Contractor behind endorsement of impeachment complaint vs Marcos Jr.</a></div><p>“This is a pattern. Create noise with impeachment drama. Divert attention from big-money corruption. Protect the inner circle at all costs,” Duterte added.</p><p>Malacañang earlier rejected allegations that the impeachment complaint against Marcos is staged to skirt the Supreme Court’s ban on having multiple impeachment cases filed against an official in a single year.</p><p>“Ang Pangulo at ang administrasyon na ito ay hindi eksperto sa paggawa ng intriga at eksperto sa paggawa ng ebidensya… Sana po matapos na ang pagiging source of fake news ng mga kaalyado nila…Hindi maganda sa imahe ng Pangulo na siya ay masampahan ng impeachment complaint,” Presidential Communications Office Undersecretary Claire Castro said.</p><div><br/></div><div><strong>TWIN TRIALS?</strong></div><div> </div><p>Meanwhile, Senate Deputy Majority Leader Risa Hontiveros said the Senate was ready for the prospect of two impeachment trials if complaints against Marcos and Vice President Sara Duterte prosper. </p><p>&quot;Hindi ko pa nababasa yung finile kasi sa House ang jurisdiction niyan sa ngayon. So hindi ko pa alam yung grounds. And gaya nang nabanggit niyo, kung umakyat yan dito sa Senate, handa akong gumanap ng tungkulin bilang Senator-Judge na i-consider ang anumang evidence na io-offer nung impeachment complaint na iyan at magdesisyon, bumoto, batay sa evidence na iyon,&quot; Hontiveros said. </p><p>&quot;Anything is possible kung parehong mag-prosper yung dalawang complaint sa House, then magiging dalawa yung tungkulin namin dito or dalawang impeachment trials,&quot; she said. </p><p>Hontiveros said that while 2 trials would not be ideal, accountability should be upheld.</p><p>&quot;Of course hindi yan ideal situation, but ang prinsipyo din naman sa puso ng anumang impeachment complaint kung umabot dito sa Senate ay na nag-pass ng judgment ang House na language nila, yung sufficient in form and substance na may humihingi talagang mamamayan ng accountability on the part of public officials.
