<p>Philippine National Police (PNP) chief Police General Jose Melencio Nartatez Jr. on Saturday vowed to implement sweeping reforms in the Philippine National Police Academy (PNPA), underscoring the need to strengthen the training ground of future police leaders.</p><p>Nartatez made the remarks during the Philippine Military Academy (PMA) Alumni Homecoming in Baguio City, where he reflected on his own roots as a member of PMA Class of 1992, the last batch of PMA graduates to join the police service.</p><p>Under the law, police officers are now primarily trained at the PNPA, while PMA graduates are commissioned into the military.</p><div><a href="https://www.abs-cbn.com/news/nation/2026/2/20/pnp-vows-no-tolerance-for-misconduct-after-manila-cops-viral-road-incident-1052"><strong>PNP vows no tolerance for misconduct after Manila cops’ viral road incident </strong></a> </div><p>“Kaya nga meron akong action plan. Pag-retire ko gusto ko safe ako at maayos ‘yung iiwanan ko na organization,” Nartatez said, referring to his commitment to professionalize and modernize the police academy.</p><p>The PNP chief acknowledged that while the PNPA has received significant funding in previous years, several programs were either not implemented or not properly completed. </p><p>He also pointed out gaps in the academy’s staffing structure, including the absence of a clearly defined plantilla for civilian employees and instructors.</p><p>“Hindi naman natin kino-compare but kailangan natin ayusin. There were hundreds of millions that were programmed doon sa PNPA in the past but hindi na-implement or hindi naayos ng maayos and so the PNP will be investing to improve ‘yung PNPA, doon ko sisimulan,” he said. </p><p>He added he has already coordinated with the Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) to secure support in improving both the PNPA and the police’s Special Action Force (SAF). </p><div><a href="https://www.abs-cbn.com/news/nation/2026/2/19/pnp-probing-alleged-espionage-case-of-mongolian-national-arrested-in-iba-1617"><strong>PNP probing alleged espionage case of Mongolian national arrested in Iba </strong></a> </div><p>Despite being the last PMA batch to enter the police service, Nartatez said leadership development within the PNP remains strong.  </p><p>“After ‘92, kailangan maihanda natin not only PNPA but the leadership within the PNP. Maraming magagaling na mga officials sa ating PNP. It’s a matter of handling them well, motivating them to do the job.” </p><div> </div>
