Maria Tan, ABS-CBN News/File" width="960"/><span class="fr-inner" style="text-align:left">The presence of the China Coast Guard (CCG) persists despite the effort of the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) to block them and assist the four main vessels of the second civilian resupply mission of the Atin Ito Coalition to the Bajo de Masinloc or Panatag Shoal in the West Philippine Sea on May 15, 2024. <em>Maria Tan, ABS-CBN News/File</em></span></span></span></div><p>MANILA – Philippine fisheries and coast guard vessels experienced alleged signal jamming near Bajo de Masinloc in the West Philippine Sea, the Philippine Coast Guard reported Monday, suspecting that the act may have come from China.</p><p>In a virtual media interview, PCG spokesperson for the West Philippine Sea Commodore Jay Tarriela said the satellite internet constellation Starlink units of Philippine ships lose signal every time they operate near or within a 24-nautical-mile range of Bajo de Masinloc.</p><p>&quot;Well, there&#x27;s no other country that we can think of that would jam our internet connectivity every time we go closer to Bajo de Masinloc. Definitely, it will be the People&#x27;s Republic of China,&quot; Tarriela said.</p><p>Bajo de Masinloc (also known as Scarborough Shoal and Panatag Shoal, historically Panacot) is a group of reefs and rocks located approximately 124 nautical miles west of the coast of Zambales, Luzon, and falls within the Philippines&#x27; 200-nautical-mile exclusive economic zone.</p><p>China, however, has maintained de facto control over the shoal since a 2012 standoff, despite a 2016 international arbitral ruling that invalidated its expansive claims in the South China Sea.</p><div><a class="fr-green fr-strong" href="https://www.abs-cbn.com/news/nation/2026/2/22/-no-way-we-re-giving-up-hontiveros-stands-firm-on-pag-asa-island-1457">READ: Hontiveros stands firm on Pag-asa Island</a></div><p>Tarriela said the government would have to make some adjustments to prevent signal jamming.</p><p>&quot;If our Starlink internet connectivity is jammed, it delays the transmission of information and it also compromises the communication of the vessels from that of those Coast Guard units that are monitoring them,&quot; Tarriela said.</p><div><br/></div><div><strong>MDA FLIGHT</strong></div><p>The PCG on Monday conducted a maritime domain awareness flight near Bajo de Masinloc, coinciding with the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources&#x27; routine fuel and ice subsidy for fishermen in the area.</p><div><a class="fr-green fr-strong" href="https://www.abs-cbn.com/news/nation/2026/2/23/pcg-encounters-chinese-radio-challenges-during-patrol-near-bajo-de-masinloc-1151">READ: PCG encounters Chinese radio challenges during routine patrol near Bajo de Masinloc</a></div><p>The mission monitored three China Coast Guard vessels at a distance of 33.6 nautical miles from Bajo de Masinloc.</p><p>At the same time, the PCG also deployed BRP Cabra and BRP Gabriela Silang to support BFAR&#x27;s subsidy program for at least 35 Philippine fishing boats.</p><p>The Philippine flight was then issued a challenge by a People&#x27;s Liberation Army Navy ship approximately 60 nautical miles off the coast of Zambales.</p><div><br/></div><div><strong>&#x27;THREATENING&#x27; FILIPINO BOATS</strong></div><p>On Sunday, Tarriela said China Coast Guard ships were seen opening their water cannons.</p><p>&quot;They just opened a water cannon, but I don&#x27;t think that the intent really was to use it. But perhaps they are just threatening Filipino fishing boats that they will be activating their water cannon already,&quot; Tarriela said.</p>
