MANILA — Some 200 tricycle drivers in Quezon City were dismayed at not receiving a P5,000 cash aid from the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) on Tuesday, the first day of the subsidy distribution, because their names were not in the agency’s master list of beneficiaries.<div><a class="fr-green fr-strong" href="https://www.abs-cbn.com/news/business/2026/3/17/cash-relief-distribution-for-tricycle-drivers-kicks-off-1128">READ: Cash relief distribution for tricycle drivers kicks off amid fuel price surge</a></div>The head of the Tricycle Operators and Drivers’ Association said he submitted the complete list of his members to the local government unit, from which the DSWD gets its data.But after lining up for hours at the payout center in Batasan Hills, they still went home empty-handed.“Napagod lang kami sa wala, yung biyahe namin naabala pa,” said Edmond Urquia.Another tricycle driver said he was told that they may be able to get the cash assistance next week or after two weeks, but he said they need it immediately, especially after diesel prices went up again.“Bakit nagkaganito, wala kami, ang iba mayroon? Sa totoo lang wala na kaming nauuwi e. Kumikita lang kami ng P700, napupunta sa gasolina, P350. E yung pambili pa namin ng bigas, tapos ulam? Wala kaming maitabi. Lahat ng lehitimo na drivers at yung driver-operator, lahat yan masasama at mabibigyan ng tulong pinansiyal,” Gatchalian said.Gatchalian also assured the public that safeguards are in place to prevent ineligible beneficiaries from receiving the aid, such as inactive drivers or those who have already passed away.“Made-detect natin yun. Kaya nga physical yung payout, hindi yung idedeposit na lang namin sa account. Hihingiin namin yung driver’s license. Titignan namin kung aktwal yung tao,” he said.Some tricycle operators also appealed to be included in the list of beneficiaries.“Unfair naman sa operator… pag nasira ang aming motor, gumagastos din kami,” said tricycle operator Maria Luisa Sarmiento.However, the DSWD maintained that, at least for now, it is prioritizing active drivers and driver-operators for the cash assistance.
