MANILA — A 53-year-old tricycle driver was arrested after allegedly beating a cat to death in Barangay Holy Spirit, Quezon City on Monday.The incident took place in front of a house along Sto. Domingo Street before dawn.Cherlaine Diego Florendo, a resident in the area, said she discovered “Mulat”, her pet cat, lifeless outside their gate.Upon reviewing CCTV footage, she said she saw the suspect striking the cat on the head with a piece of wood, killing it instantly.Earlier footage showed the cat quietly sitting on the sidewalk before the assault.Florendo said she initially could not believe what happened to her pet, which had just recovered from an illness.“Ngayon, ‘yan lang. ‘Tong dumating ‘yung araw na ano, kahapon. Sabi ko, &#x27;Bakit patay? Ba’t nakahiga doon sa may dulo?&#x27; ...Kakagaling lang niya sa ubo’t sipon. Inalagaan ko ng ubo’t sipon ’yon, isang linggo. Sabi ko, &#x27;Baka mamamatay kasi, eh.&#x27; Tapos makikita ko, patay agad,” she said.After watching the incident on CCTV, she immediately reported the matter to police.Officers from Quezon City Police District Station 14 conducted follow-up operations that led to the suspect’s apprehension.“So after po nung series ng follow-up, nalaman ho nung kapatid, isinurender na rin ho nila itong kapatid, itong suspect natin,” said QCPD PS14 commander PLt. Col. Jefry Gamboa. Investigation revealed that the suspect allegedly became irritated with the cat for frequenting and allegedly urinating on his tricycle.“Naiinis ako, nagagalit ako sa nagagalit. Kaya lang patay na eh. Kaya lang, hahayaan ko pa ba siyang ano, hindi mareklamo? Baka ulitin niya pa ulit,” said Florendo.The suspect admitted hitting the cat but claimed he had no intention of killing it.“Yung pusa po, sa kada babyahe po ako ng umaga ng tricycle. Eh, ito nga umaga na lang po ako naglilinis ng tricycle bago bumiyahe…Siyempre, nakakahiya rin po sa pasahero na nakakaamoy ng ihi ng pusa sa tricycle,” the suspect said.“Balak ko na saktan lang. Siyempre, naging malikot ’yung pusa, napuruhan ko po…Hindi ko po alam na may nag-aalaga doon, sir, kasi akala ko gala lang. Na nagpapakain, pinapakain, nagpapakain lang po ’yung doon sa ano, ’yung,” the suspect added.Police said the situation could have been resolved peacefully.“Mas maganda nadala na lang ho sana sa usapan…Opo sana sir, at least magkaroon pa siya ng kaibigan. ’Yun ’yung naging ano natin doon sir, kasi magkapitbahay lang din naman,” said Gamboa.Florendo said the suspect could have simply driven the cat away or spoken to her directly.“Sana tinaboy na lang niya...
