Vico Sotto/Facebook</span></span></span></div><p>MANILA — The Pasig City local government on Monday launched five electric minibuses that will be used for its Libreng Sakay Program, offering residents an alternative mode of transportation amid rising fuel costs. </p><div><a href="https://www.abs-cbn.com/news/business/2026/3/23/gas-diesel-up-again-doe-lists-latest-fuel-price-increases-0859">Gas, diesel up again: DOE lists latest fuel price increases</a></div><p>The inauguration ceremony was held on March 23, following the city’s regular flag-raising activity. </p><p>According to Pasig City Mayor Vico Sotto, each electric minibus has a seating capacity of 22 passengers and can accommodate up to eight standing commuters per trip. </p><p>The acquisition of the minibuses cost nearly P20 million, or roughly P4 million per unit, funded by the city government. </p><p>“Ilang taon na rin naman na mas tinitignan na namin yung electric… Sakto lang yung pagdating niya, makakatulong kasi tumataas ang presyo ng langis,” Sotto said.</p><div><span class="fr-video fr-deletable fr-fvc fr-dvb fr-draggable" contenteditable="false" draggable="true"><iframe src="https://www.facebook.com/plugins/post.php?href=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.facebook.com%2FPasigPIO%2Fposts%2Fpfbid0QcaTVkMUB6jh1hi4zaXyhrpvpW1D65x8jnQEAFosdAMLRnA2LfUvV1GvxcrGYXKBl&amp;show_text=true&amp;width=500" width="500" height="774" style="border:none;overflow:hidden" scrolling="no" frameBorder="0" allowfullscreen="" class="fr-draggable"></iframe></span><br/></div><p>The vehicles will be deployed from Caruncho Avenue to the Temporary Pasig City Hall and vice versa.</p><div><a href="https://www.abs-cbn.com/news/nation/2026/3/24/senators-urge-marcos-to-declare-national-emergency-due-to-oil-crisis-1203">Senators urge Marcos to declare state of national emergency, call oil problem a &#x27;crisis&#x27;</a></div><p>Sotto said the introduction of electric vehicles in public transport is timely, noting that it can help ease the burden on commuters as fuel prices continue to fluctuate.  </p><p>According to Sotto, the e-minibuses are meant to test potential routes that the local government plans to propose to the Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board as part of its route rationalization efforts.</p><p>“Titignan namin kung okay ba ‘to, feasible ba ‘to, sapat ba yung magiging ridership o magiging demand? Kung gumana yung mga testing namin sa pamamagitan ng libreng sakay, mas mare-recommend namin siya sa LTFRB na magbukas na talaga ng rota doon,” he said.</p><p>Sotto said the initiative is not intended to displace existing public utility drivers, but to address gaps in public transportation, particularly in underserved areas.</p><p>“Kami naman, lagi pag may panukala kami, yung gusto naming unang makinabang, kung sino yung existing na. Baka lang kailangan ilipat yung iba kung may oversupply sa ibang rota, yung iba naman underserved… Kasi sa totoo, kulang na kulang yung ibang rota sa Pasig, o yung iba wala talaga. May demand pero walang masasakyan so mahirap.
