Atta Kenare, AFP" width="960"/><span class="fr-inner" style="text-align:left">Smoke and fire rise from the site of airstrikes at Mehrabad International Airport in Tehran on March 7, 2026. <em>Atta Kenare, AFP</em></span></span></span></div><p>MANILA — A House resolution seeking to call for the immediate cessation of hostilities in Iran, involving the United States and Israel, was authored by 50 members of the House of Representatives.</p><p>House Resolution 909 filed on March 25 is also meant to express concern over the global economic impacts of war, including escalating oil prices.</p><p>“Therefore, be it resolved, as it is hereby resolved, that the House of Representatives of the Republic of the Philippines call for the immediate cessation of hostilities in Iran, particularly an end to the military aggression instigated by the United States of America and Israel, in order to prevent further loss of life and humanitarian suffering,” the resolution reads.</p><div><a class="fr-green fr-strong" href="https://www.abs-cbn.com/news/world/2026/3/25/aviation-tourism-agriculture-the-economic-sectors-hit-by-the-war-2311">READ: Aviation, tourism, agriculture... the economic sectors hit by the war</a></div><p>Among the 50 members of Congress who authored the bill are Makabayan bloc lawmakers Kabataan party-list Representative Renee Co, Gabriela party-list Representative Sarah Elago, and ACT Teachers party-list Representative Antonio Tinio, as well as Lanao Del Sur Representative Zia Alonto Adiong and ML party-list Representative Leila de Lima.</p><p>In a statement, the Makabayan bloc said “military aggression by the United States and Israel against Iran” disproportionately affects innocent civilians and contributed to sharp increases in global oil prices.</p><p>&quot;The international community has a shared responsibility to prevent further escalation of violence and to pursue negotiations and peaceful solutions to conflicts… The Philippines, as part of the international community, must uphold diplomacy, dialogue, and international cooperation as essential pillars of global peace and stability,&quot; the resolution said.</p><div><br/></div><div><strong>BILL ON DECLARING FUEL A PRIME COMMODITY</strong></div><p>The Makabayan bloc also filed House Bill 8765 on Wednesday to declare gasoline and diesel as prime commodities, amending the Price Act.</p><p>“Under oil deregulation since 1998, price spikes have been left largely unchecked and monopoly oil firms have been allowed to dictate the people’s cost of living. Malinaw ang krisis sa presyo ng langis at hindi dapat pinababayaan ang kartel na maghari-harian,” the three lawmakers said in a statement.</p><p>The bill also seeks to strengthen the government’s power to place price ceilings on gasoline and diesel during calamities.</p><p>“This measure, however, is only an urgent relief and accountability tool, not a complete solution to the structural damage caused by the Downstream Oil Industry Deregulation Act. Congress must move with urgency to advance deeper reforms, including stronger regulation of the downstream oil industry, centralized oil procurement, Petron renationalization, and mandatory unbundling of oil prices,” the Makabayan bloc said.</p>
