Bong Suntay on Wednesday said his remarks on actress Anne Curtis were “not meant maliciously” and rejected a call that he undergo gender sensitivity training. </p><p>During the Tuesday deliberations of the House Committee on Justice, Suntay defended Vice President Sara Duterte’s past statement that she “imagined” herself “cutting” the head of President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. by saying he himself experienced having “desire” upon seeing Curtis in public, but he could only “imagine” what could happen.</p><p>“Kay Anne, that analogy was not meant maliciously,” Suntay said. “It was an analogy based doon sa konteksto ng pagdinig dito.” </p><p>“It may have been in bad taste for some. I apologize kung mayroon tayong mga sensitivities na tinamaan, but that was not the intention. The intention was to make a point that usually, oftentimes, statements are taken out of context and conclusions are made,” he said. </p><p>Asked whether he regretted making the “analogy”, Suntay replied, “I stand by my statement that that analogy was used to prove that statements are oftentimes taken out of context. Nagsisisi ako na may nasaktang mga kababaihan because that was never the intention ng aking statement.”</p><p>Suntay believes his analogy was “effective” in drawing attention to his argument.</p><p>“Kung mali ang analogy, hindi nagustuhan ng iba, well sorry doon sa mga hindi nakagusto. But actually, in fact that analogy was effective. Dahil hindi n’yo ako papansinin kung hindi ko ibinigay ‘yung analogy na ‘yun,” he explained.</p><div><iframe src="https://www.facebook.com/plugins/video.php?height=314&amp;href=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.facebook.com%2Freel%2F1595610005016229%2F&amp;show_text=false&amp;width=560&amp;t=0" width="560" height="314" style="border:none;overflow:hidden" scrolling="no" frameBorder="0" allowfullscreen=""></iframe></div><p>Suntay said the call for him to undergo gender sensitivity training was “uncalled for” as his analogy “was purely taken out of the context and there was no malice meant in that statement.” </p><p>“And I think naman my actions, my previous disposition, hindi lang dito sa statement na ibinigay kahapon, would show that I am very gender sensitive. In fact, ay iginagalang natin ‘yung mga kababaihan. Kung ‘yung conclusion ay naging may malice, hindi ‘yun ‘yung intention ng aking analogy,” he said. </p><p>Some fellow lawmakers have urged Suntay to issue a public apology over his remarks perceived as “offensive” and an “objectification of women”.</p><p>“Nalulungkot tayo na makarinig ng ganoong remarks that objectify women, especially in a process na dapat ina-uphold ang justice and accountability. Kaya may panawagan tayo, a very sincere one to Rep. Suntay and to all members of the House of Representatives to undergo a gender sensitivity training. Walang espasyo dito sa Kapulungang ito at kahit saan para mag-objectify ng women,” Akbayan party-list Rep. Percival Cendaña said.</p><p>He also urged Suntay to apologize to Curtis and all women offended by his remark.</p><p>“It’s a fervent appeal to Cong. Suntay to apologize to Anne Curtis and to all women na na-offend doon sa kanyang remarks,” Cendaña said.</p><p>“’Yung pinakamahalaga sa lalung madali panahon ay sensitization. Wag natin gamitin ang objectification of women para lang ipagtanggol si VP Sara Duterte,” he added.</p><p>“Tayo ang gumagawa ng batas dito, so tayo dapat ang unang nag-a-uphold ng mga batas na iyon.
