[Japanese] environmental and disaster management experts will assess and provide technical advice on the Navotas Sanitary Landfill fire,&quot; the Japanese Embassy in the Philippines announced in a social media post.</p><p>The JDR Expert Team consists of 7 members from the Embassy of Japan in the Philippines, the Fire and Disaster Management Agency, the National Institute for Environmental Studies, and the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), according to Japan&#x27;s Foreign Ministry press release.</p><p>&quot;We will work closely with the Philippines to monitor the situation to mitigate the health risks of affected communities,&quot; it added.</p><div><a href="https://www.abs-cbn.com/news/nation/2026/4/16/access-issue-hinders-efforts-to-suppress-navotas-landfill-fire-1356">Access issue hinders efforts to suppress Navotas landfill fire</a></div><p>The team will also assist in &quot;assessing the damage in the Philippines and provide technical advice on firefighting operations, air pollution measurement and assessment, and waste management.&quot;</p><p>The Philippines&#x27; Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP) this week said it began a “soil cover operation” to extinguish the landfill fire.</p><p>&quot;Very unhealthy air quality&quot; had been observed in several parts of Metro Manila since last week after the incident.</p><p>The fire-hit facility spans around 47 hectares, with 43 hectares used as landfill.
