Handout/Presidential Communications Office</div>MANILA — The Philippines’ agreement with Iran to ensure the safe passage of Philippine-bound vessels through the Strait of Hormuz will not affect Manila’s longstanding ties with the United States, Malacañang said Monday.After Iran agreed to the Philippines’ call to exempt Philippines-flagged ships from its chokehold in the Strait of Hormuz, the Palace described Manila and Tehran’s relations as “vibrant” even as Iran remains at war with Israel and United States, the Philippines’ oldest defense ally.<div><a class="fr-green fr-strong" href="https://www.abs-cbn.com/news/nation/2026/4/2/dfa-iran-to-allow-safe-passage-of-ph-flagged-ships-seafarers-through-strait-of-hormuz-1726">DFA: Iran to allow safe passage of PH-flagged ships, seafarers through Strait of Hormuz</a></div>“Wala po tayong nakikitang issue sa ating kaibigang bansa na US dahil alam naman nila ang sitwasyon ngayon,” Castro said.She likened the arrangement to the continued importation of oil from Russia, noting that even the United States had temporarily eased sanctions on Russian oil due to global supply constraints.The assurance came after Iran agreed to exempt Philippine-flagged vessels from its restrictions in the Strait of Hormuz, a critical shipping lane that handles about 20 percent of the world’s oil supply.Citing information from the Department of Foreign Affairs, Castro said Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi guaranteed the “ligtas at mapayapang pagdaan” of Philippine vessels.“Ayon sa Department of Foreign Affairs… tiniyak ni Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi ang ligtas at mapayapang pagdaan ng Philippine-flagged vessels,” she said.“Matitiyak din nito ang tuloy-tuloy na delivery ng fertilizer at langis sa bansa,” she added.Despite this, Malacañang said it could not yet determine how the deal would affect domestic fuel prices, which have hovered around P100 per liter since March.“Hindi pinag-uusapan dito ang halaga,” Castro said. “Ang pinag-uusapan dito ay ‘yung patuloy na supply ng petrolyo sa ating bansa.”Further details of the agreement are expected to be discussed during the Unified Package for Livelihoods, Industry, Food, and Transport (UPLIFT) meeting on April 7.The Development Budget Coordination Committee is also set to convene the same day to recommend measures to cushion the impact of rising oil prices on the economy.
