MANILA -- The House of Representatives approved on third and final reading a measure extending the validity of identification cards issued by the Professional Regulation Commission from three years to five years.With 266 votes in favor, none against and one abstention, the chamber passed House Bill No. 8876, which lengthens the validity of Professional Identification Cards usually renewed every three years during the birth month of licensed professionals.House Majority Leader Ferdinand Alexander Marcos III said the bill answers the long-standing call of professionals for a simpler and more efficient renewal process, noting it would help reduce congestion in PRC appointment slots while maintaining regulatory standards.Leyte Rep. Ferdinand Martin Romualdez, one of the measure&#x27;s principal authors, said the proposal would ease the burden on millions of Filipino professionals by reducing the frequency of renewals and related expenses.Under the bill, PRC-issued Professional Identification Cards will be valid for five years, subject to compliance with continuing professional development requirements and other regulatory standards.The measure also directs the PRC&#x27;s Information and Communication Technology Service to upgrade the Licensure Examination Registration Information System and related administrative processes within six months from the law&#x27;s effectivity.Lawmakers said the measure would benefit a wide range of professionals, including teachers, nurses, engineers, architects and accountants nationwide.<div> </div><div>PROTECTION OF INDIGENOUS FILIPINO WRITING SYSTEMS</div>Also approved on the third and final reading on Wednesday was House Bill 8699, an act promoting Philippine indigenous and traditional writing systems and providing further protection, preservation and conservation. There were 266 members voting in the affirmative, zero in the negative, and one abstention.The proposed legislation recognizes indigenous writing systems as an important part of the country&#x27;s cultural heritage and identity. It aims to revive and safeguard traditional scripts used by early Filipino communities.Under the bill, government agencies are expected to strengthen efforts to document, promote, and preserve these traditional scripts through research, cultural programs, and public awareness campaigns.Meanwhile, the National Commission for Culture and the Arts will serve as the lead agency in implementing programs aimed at protecting and promoting indigenous scripts, in coordination with other government institutions.
