Ted Aljibe, AFP   </p><div><br/></div><div><br/></div><p>MANILA — Authorities on Wednesday said nearly 80 percent of the fire at the Navotas Sanitary Landfill had been extinguished, almost a month after it broke out.</p><p>The Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH), which is assisting the Navotas city government by deploying heavy equipment for soil capping, said it was targeting to contain the blaze within the next several days.</p><p>“We are confident na yung target natin, siguro in four or five days matapos natin yung pag-suppress ng fire. This is because dumadami yung lupa na dinadala natin, dumadami yung mga equipment, barges na ginagamit natin sa pagdala ng lupa doon,” said DPWH Undersecretary Charles Calima.</p><p>Navotas City Mayor John Rey Tiangco said the latest assessment by the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) showed that air quality in Metro Manila and nearby areas such as Bulacan had improved.</p><div><a href="https://www.abs-cbn.com/news/nation/2026/5/1/metro-manila-landfill-fire-leaves-locals-gasping-0820">Metro Manila landfill fire leaves locals gasping </a></div><p>However, he said the local government would continue to monitor the 44-hectare landfill even after the fire was extinguished.</p><p>“Hindi mo naman kasi nakikita yung apoy, usually sa ilalim yan, subsurface. So gagamitin pa rin natin yung drone regularly para makita natin kung may potential na mag-init sa area at maagapan natin,” he said.</p><p>Tiangco added that the city government would implement the Safe Closure and Rehabilitation Plan that landfill operator Phil Ecology Systems Corp. (PhilEco) failed to carry out.</p><p>But Tiangco assured the public that the company would be held to account, saying that even though the site of the landfill had been expropriated, PhilEco still should have properly wound down its operations.</p><p>“Nasa Solicitor General na po yung mga data at papeles pong yan.
