<div><strong>Baterbonia conferred Agusan del Sur’s Datu Lipus Makapandong Award </strong></div><p>Ateneo de Manila basketball player Rene Clert Baterbonia will be laid to rest in the new municipal cemetery in Talacogon town, Agusan del Sur, on Wednesday, June 24. </p><p>Baterbonia, who died due to asphyxia by drowning in a team building in Aurora with another teammate Nigerian Divine Adili.</p><p>The town’s new cemetery in Barangay Labnig is being prepared as Baterbonia will be the first to be buried there. </p><div><a href="https://www.abs-cbn.com/sports/basketball/2026/6/15/admu-president-says-school-reached-out-to-victims-families-after-drowning-incident-1528"><strong>Ateneo president says university reached out Baterbonia, Adili families after drowning incident </strong></a> </div><p>The site previously served as the archery venue during the Palarong Pambansa - Agusan del Sur held last month.</p><p>Meanwhile, Baterbonia’s kababayans and people from other places visited the wake to pay their last respects to the sports hero of Davao City and Agusan del Sur. </p><p>Meanwhile, Baterbonia was also posthumously conferred the Datu Lipus Makapandong Award by the Provincial Government of Agusan del Sur in recognition of his achievements and for bringing honor, prestige, and pride to the province through sports.</p><div><a href="https://www.abs-cbn.com/sports/basketball/2026/6/16/ateneo-de-davao-retires-rene-baterbonia-s-no-2-jersey-renames-court-in-his-honor-1408"><strong>Ateneo de Davao retires Rene Baterbonia&#x27;s No. 2 jersey, renames court in his honor</strong></a></div><p>Baterbonia had shown great potential during his high school career, leading the Davao region to its first-ever basketball title in the Palarong Pambansa in 2025 wherein he scored 19 points in the Final.</p><p>He later helped the Philippines win the 14th ASEAN School Games, before taking home the silver medal in his final Palarong Pambansa in his hometown Agusan del Sur.</p>
