<p>MANILA — The Quezon City government is strengthening security measures in schools following the shooting at San Jose National High School in Tacloban City, Leyte, that led to the deaths of three minors. </p><p>Quezon City Mayor Joy Belmonte said the city government ordered the assessment of possible entry points in schools and was coordinating with police and barangay officials to strengthen security.</p><p>“Sa kasalukuyan ay pinapa-surveillance ko na sa kapulisan natin pati sa mga barangay ‘yung iba’t iba nating posibleng entrance sa kani-kanilang paaralan,” Belmonte said in an interview with reporters.</p><p>“We will do engineering interventions to make sure to address those entrances–those legal entrances to the schools,” she added.</p><p>Belmonte emphasized the need for students and school personnel to be prepared during emergencies, noting that some students might not know how to respond when faced with sudden threats.</p><p>“Important din na bumuo tayo ng protocols kasi napapansin natin na kapag may nangyayaring insidente parang hindi nila alam ang gagawin nila,” Belmonte said.</p><p>“‘Yung iba shocked na lang, ‘yung iba, sumisigaw o tumatakbo. Kailangan mayroon tayong drills, mayroon tayong simulations para alam ng mga bata ang gagawin nila,” she added.</p><p>The city government said it would implement heightened school safety protocols, including regular emergency drills, increased police visibility near schools, and engineering interventions to improve campus security.</p><p>Belmonte said each classroom would have a designated student safety officer, such as a boy scout, who could help guide classmates during emergencies. She said the emergency hotline number 122 would be printed on students’ notebooks to ensure learners have access to immediate assistance when needed.</p><p>The Quezon City Police District (QCPD), according to Belmonte, has volunteered to develop modules for the conduct of the drills, while police officers will conduct random visibility patrols around schools.</p><p>The Tacloban shooting killed three students and injured at least 20 others, according to initial reports. Police said the incident happened at around 9 a.m., when the suspects allegedly entered classrooms and fired at fellow students.
