'Wrong remedy', SC says on petition vs Escudero’s campaign donations

<p>MANILA - The Supreme Court has dismissed the petition for review filed by high school teacher Barry Tayam against Senator Francis Escudero and the Political and Finance and Affairs Department of the Commission on Elections.</p><p>In an en banc notice dated June 3, 2026 and issued by Clerk of Court Marife Lomibao-Cuevas, the court resolved to dismiss the petition for review filed by Tayam “for being the wrong remedy.”</p><div><a href="https://www.abs-cbn.com/news/nation/2026/7/8/escudero-warns-prosecution-defense-against-making-concluding-remarks-1442"><strong>Escudero warns prosecution, defense against making &#x27;concluding remarks&#x27;</strong></a></div><p>The petition was filed by Tayam December last year, for a review of the poll body’s decision that cleared Escudero of wrongdoing over a P30-million campaign donation from a government contractor for the 2022 elections.</p><p>Last March, the Supreme Court granted the motion filed by Tayam to admit his petition review.</p><div><a href="https://www.abs-cbn.com/news/nation/2026/7/6/senate-impeachment-court-elects-escudero-as-presiding-officer-1448"><strong>Senate impeachment court elects Escudero as presiding officer </strong></a> </div>
