Jose Melencio Nartatez Jr. said local police commanders have been instructed to work closely with DepEd offices and school administrators to ensure police participation and presence during the drills.</p><div><a class="fr-green fr-strong" href="https://www.abs-cbn.com/news/nation/2026/7/8/deped-to-launch-active-shooting-drills-in-schools-1226">READ: DepEd to launch &#x27;active shooting drills&#x27; to equip students and teachers with response know-how</a></div><p>According to Nartatez, the drills aim to equip learners and educators with practical knowledge on how to respond in the event of an armed attack inside school premises.</p><p>&quot;The safety and welfare of our learners are always our top priority, and the information that would be provided through this program would be their first line of protection and defense in cases of emergency situations inside the campus,&quot; Nartatez said in a statement. </p><p>Education Secretary Sonny Angara earlier said the drills will establish standard protocols for schools to follow in the event of a gun attack, allowing school officials to respond quickly and protect students and staff.</p><p>The PNP said it has been working with DepEd in developing security protocols after the deadly shooting at a high school in Tacloban City, which police described as the country&#x27;s first recorded gun attack inside a school.</p><p>Beyond the active shooter drills, the PNP said it will continue implementing campus safety measures, including regular police patrols around schools, guidance and counseling programs, and anti-bullying initiatives through the Women and Children Protection Desk.</p><div><a class="fr-green fr-strong" href="https://www.abs-cbn.com/news/nation/2026/7/1/cop-who-owns-gun-used-in-tacloban-school-shooting-faces-senate-probe-1221">READ: Police looking at family issues involving 14-year-old suspect in Tacloban school shooting</a></div><p>Nartatez also directed police commanders to coordinate with schools on the possible deployment of police officers during Monday flag-raising ceremonies to further enhance security and foster stronger ties between law enforcement and students.</p><p>&quot;The children are the future of this country and as such, it is our mandate, it is our obligation to protect them and to make them feel safe not only in their homes and on the streets, but also in their schools,&quot; Nartatez said.</p><p>The PNP said it will continue coordinating with DepEd and other government agencies to improve school safety and help prevent similar incidents in the future.</p><div><br/></div><div><strong>RELATED VIDEO:</strong></div><div><strong><span class="fr-video fr-deletable fr-fvc fr-dvb fr-draggable" contenteditable="false" draggable="true"><iframe width="960" height="540" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/KlQcZZ2ERf0?&amp;wmode=opaque&amp;rel=0" frameBorder="0" allowfullscreen="" class="fr-draggable"></iframe></span></strong></div>
