Rodante Marcoleta was brought to the UP-Philippine General Hospital (UP-PGH) on Tuesday to undergo an independent medical examination as<a href="http://www.abs-cbnnews.com/news/nation/2026/7/13/sandiganbayan-orders-independent-medical-examination-of-marcoleta-at-pgh-2056"> ordered by the Sandiganbayan.</a></p><p>Marcoleta arrived at the hospital wearing a protective vest and detainee shirt. He was handcuffed and in a wheelchair.</p><div><iframe src="https://www.facebook.com/plugins/video.php?height=315&amp;href=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.facebook.com%2Freel%2F1565572485358944%2F&amp;show_text=false&amp;width=560&amp;t=0" width="560" height="315" style="border:none;overflow:hidden" scrolling="no" frameBorder="0" allowfullscreen=""></iframe></div><p>Philippine National Police (PNP) Public Information Office chief PCol. Allen Rae Co said the transfer was in compliance with the Sandiganbayan&#x27;s directive, adding that Marcoleta would be returned to the PNP General Hospital after the evaluation.</p><p>Co said the court order did not specify what medical tests would be conducted but said the examination was presumed to determine whether Marcoleta was medically fit to stand trial.</p><p>“All of these things ay under the review ng ating Sandiganbayan kung ano po ang sasabihin nila after,” Co said. </p><p>“Aside from that, ‘yun pong ating General Hospital as well as ‘yung UP General Hospital is ordered to render their report within 3 days sa Sandiganbayan. So ‘yun po siguro ang gagamitin nila to evaluate kung saan mag-stay or saan ico-commit si Sen. Marcoleta,” he added.</p><div><span class="fr-video fr-deletable fr-fvc fr-dvb fr-draggable" contenteditable="false" draggable="true"><iframe src="https://www.facebook.com/plugins/video.php?height=314&amp;href=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.facebook.com%2Freel%2F871490022697297%2F&amp;show_text=false&amp;width=560&amp;t=0" width="560" height="314" style="border:none;overflow:hidden" scrolling="no" frameBorder="0" allowfullscreen="" class="fr-draggable"></iframe></span></div><p>Despite the additional examination, Co said Marcoleta&#x27;s condition remained stable.</p><p>Marcoleta is also expected to appear before the Sandiganbayan on Wednesday as previously scheduled.</p><p>Co said the PNP welcomed the court&#x27;s decision to seek an independent medical assessment from UP-PGH, saying it would help address public questions surrounding Marcoleta&#x27;s health.</p><p>“I choose to believe rather than doubting ‘yung evaluation ng ating mga doctors dito ay ginawa po ito ng Sandiganbayan para ma-erase na nga any doubts from the public ‘yung doubts, ‘yung agam-agam ng ating publiko,” Co said. </p><p>“Nagkakaroon na ng kuwestiyon siguro dahil nga sa evaluation ng ating mga doctors so this will definitely show kung ano po talaga ang status ni Sen. Marcoleta,” he added.</p><p>He said the PNP stands by the findings of its doctors at the PNP General Hospital and expressed confidence that they acted professionally and without bias.</p><p>Co rejected suggestions that Marcoleta was receiving special treatment while under PNP custody.</p><p>He said Marcoleta remains under the custody of the Criminal Investigation and Detection Group (CIDG), not yet in a jail facility, and that authorities are duty-bound to provide medical care to anyone in their custody who becomes ill.</p><p>He added that Marcoleta has been confined in a regular hospital room and that transferring detainees to outside hospitals for treatment, subject to court approval, is a standard practice also observed in other detention facilities.</p><p>Marcoleta has been confined at the PNP General Hospital since July 6 following his arrest in connection with his plunder case.</p><p>Doctors earlier diagnosed him with mild pneumonia and cardiomegaly or an enlarged heart. </p><p>Imaging of his cervical spine also showed degenerative disc disease.</p><div><a href="https://www.abs-cbn.com/news/nation/2026/7/10/-he-is-coping-rep-paolo-marcoleta-says-of-detained-father-2010">‘He is coping,’ Rep.
