MANILA — Around 350 families were affected by a massive fire that hit Barangay 163 in Tondo, Manila on Tuesday afternoon, based on the initial estimate of the Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP).The fire broke out at around 4 p.m. and was raised to the fifth alarm by 5:29 p.m., prompting the deployment of at least 20 fire trucks to the scene.BFP Manila Senior Fire Inspector Ronald Lim said the blaze spread rapidly due to strong winds and because many of the houses in the area were made of light materials.He added that narrow streets and the lack of nearby fire hydrants made firefighting operations more difficult.“(Nagdeclare ng 5th alarm) kasi yung ating mga dinadaanan ay mga masisikip, kailangan magdagdag ng maraming linya. At para makarating din po yung BFP and volunteers from other cities para maikutan natin yung apoy at hindi na lumaki,” he said.Many residents were forced to flee with little to no time to save their belongings.“Wala pong naligtas kahit isang brief o panty, wala po,” said Arce Rejano, whose blood pressure spiked during the incident. She later received medical attention from the city&#x27;s disaster response team.No casualties were reported.Authorities declared the fire under control at 7:26 p.m. before it was fully extinguished at 8:59 p.m.Investigators are looking into the possibility that the fire was caused by a rice cooker that had been left switched on while its owners were away from home.“Patuloy po naming pinapaalalahanan lahat ng residente sa mga community na kung may gagamitin po silang appliances, see to it na kung aalis sila ng bahay ay tanggalin agad yung saksakan dahil ito po ay pwedeng maging sanhi ng sunog,” said BFP Manila Fire Chief Inspector Demetrio Sablan Jr.The barangay hall and the local high school now serve as temporary shelter for affected residents.
