Carpenter, demanding a swift investigation and justice for his sudden death.</p><div><a href="https://www.abs-cbn.com/news/nation/2026/7/14/american-marine-biologist-gunned-down-in-negros-oriental-0820">American marine biologist gunned down in Negros Oriental, partner assaulted</a></div><p>Carpenter, 73, was shot and killed on Sunday night by three unidentified armed men who forcibly entered his residence in Barangay Ajong, Sibulan, Negros Oriental. His death has sent shockwaves through local and international scientific and environmental conservation communities.</p><p>Having dedicated much of his life to studying and preserving Philippine oceans since the 1970s, Carpenter authored the landmark scientific paper that declared the Verde Island Passage (VIP) as the &quot;Center of the Center of Marine Shorefish Biodiversity&quot; in the world.</p><div><br/></div><div><strong>DEVASTATING LOSS TO MARINE SCIENCE</strong></div><div><br/></div><p>Fr. Edwin Gariguez, lead convenor of Protect Verde Island Passage (Protect VIP), expressed deep grief over the tragedy, highlighting the late scientist&#x27;s immeasurable contribution to the country.</p><p>&quot;Dr. Kent Carpenter dedicated his life to revealing the extraordinary richness of the Verde Island Passage to the world. His work reminded us that the Philippines carries a global responsibility to protect this irreplaceable marine treasure,&quot; Gariguez said in a statement on Tuesday.</p><p>The group urged law enforcement agencies to conduct a thorough and transparent investigation to track down the perpetrators and uncover the motive behind the attack.</p><p>“We grieve with the loved ones of Dr. Carpenter and the whole marine conservation community in the face of this terrible loss. We also urge authorities to ensure justice and conduct a thorough investigation into this crime,” Gariguez added.</p><div><br/></div><div><strong>CHAMPION FOR ENVIRONMENTAL DEFENDERS</strong></div><div><br/></div><p>Beyond his academic and research contributions as a part-time professor and associate researcher at Silliman University, Carpenter was a steadfast ally of Filipino coastal communities. </p><p>In 2024, he actively lent his voice and scientific expertise to Protect VIP’s campaign to designate the VIP as a national marine protected area.</p><p>The advocacy group emphasized that his death underscores the persistent dangers faced by scientific and environmental workers in the country.</p><p>“We stand anew in solidarity with the call for the protection of environmental defenders who dedicate their lives to science, conservation, and the protection of our common home and of vulnerable communities,” Gariguez said.</p><p>“As we mourn his passing, we reaffirm our commitment to the cause that Dr. Carpenter championed: protecting the Verde Island Passage and all of our country’s biodiverse ecosystems,” he added.</p><p>The management of the Tubbataha Reefs Natural Park also paid tribute to Carpenter,.</p><p>&quot;Since 2018, Kent gave his time freely to the park, driven by a love for the reef. He was a brilliant scientist who helped us truly understand what we are protecting,&quot; the Tubbataha management said in a statement.</p><p>&quot;You are sorely missed, Kent!
