MANILA — Tributes and calls for justice continue to pour in following the killing of renowned marine biologist Dr. Kent Carpenter, who was found dead inside his home in Sibulan, Negros Oriental on Sunday. Scientists, environmental groups, and conservation advocates are mourning the loss of a researcher whose decades of work helped transform the understanding and protection of the Philippines&#x27; rich marine biodiversity.Greenpeace Philippines described Carpenter&#x27;s death as a significant loss at a time when the country&#x27;s seas are increasingly threatened by climate change, plastic pollution, and biodiversity loss. &quot;At a time when the worsening plastic and climate crises continue to threaten our seas and the communities that depend on them, we need more people like Dr. Kent who champion the protection of our environment and stand with communities,&quot; the group said.Carpenter&#x27;s connection to the Philippines began in the 1970s after earning his biology degree. Their partnership helped shape decades of research on coral reefs, reef fishes, and marine ecosystems.Carpenter also developed close ties with Silliman University, where he mentored Filipino scientists and opened opportunities for local researchers to collaborate with international institutions. Dr. Robert Guino-o of Silliman University, who considered Carpenter his mentor, remembered him not only for his scientific expertise but also for his compassion toward students and coastal communities.”I remember he would sit down and take the time to listen to concerns ranging from research or personal concerns before he would give his advice,&quot; Guino-o said. &quot;He will be sorely missed talaga sa Silliman and certainly a big loss to the scientific community. He has this care for students, fisherfolks, fish vendors. He&#x27;s good at Tagalog and a bit of Cebuano. These are traits that really endeared him to many people.”The University of the Philippines Marine Science Institute also paid tribute to Carpenter, highlighting his pioneering studies on Philippine coral reefs, reef fishes, and fisheries that laid the foundation for modern coral reef ecology in the country. According to the institute, Carpenter&#x27;s research helped establish the Philippines as the &quot;center of the center of marine shore fish biodiversity,&quot; a global recognition of the country&#x27;s unparalleled diversity of reef fishes.He also strongly advocated for the protection of the Verde Island Passage, one of the world&#x27;s most biologically diverse marine ecosystems, pushing for its designation as a National Protected Area and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Beyond marine biodiversity research, Carpenter also played a key role in the Philippines&#x27; arbitration case against China over the West Philippine Sea. Na hindi lang ito mapupunta sa hangin, na hindi lang ito maitatago sa mga library, hindi lang matatago sa mga dokumento, kundi malalaman ito ng mga komunidad,&quot; said Kalikasan spokesperson Cathleen de Guzman. In a report on Friday, authorities have apprehended suspects of Carpenter&#x27;s killing. Still colleagues and advocates are calling for swift justice while honoring a scientist whose life&#x27;s work helped reveal the extraordinary richness of Philippine marine ecosystems and inspired generations of Filipino researchers dedicated to protecting them.
