<div><span class="fr-img-caption fr-fic fr-dib" style="width:960px;display:block" width="960"><span class="fr-img-wrap"><img src="https://od2-image-api.abs-cbn.com/prod/editorImage/178487034912720230721-palarong-pambansa-presscon-MT-9.jpg" style="width:960px" class="fr-fic fr-dib" width="960"/><span class="fr-inner" style="text-align:left">Vice President Sara Duterte. <em>Maria Tan ABS-CBN News/File</em></span></span></span>MANILA — Vice President Sara Duterte issued a challenge to local government units as she highlighted the importance of disaster preparedness this National Disaster Resilience Month.</div><p>In a video message published on her Facebook page Friday, July 24, Duterte urged localities to strictly enforce the National Building Code of the Philippines and other security protocols.</p><p>“Sa paggunita natin sa National Disaster Resilience Month, hinahamon ko ang ating mga lokal na pamahalaan na mahigpit na ipatupad ang mga building code at safety standards, suriin ang mga evacuation center, at ayusin ang mga emergency protocol,” she said.</p><p>She also called on Filipino families to prepare for calamities.</p><p>“Sa bawat pamilyang Pilipino, tiyakin natin ang kaligtasan ng ating mga tahanan: laging subaybayan ang mga emergency alerts, maghanda ng survival kit, alamin ang mga ruta ng paglikas, at makilahok sa mga emergency drills. Ligtas lang ang isang komunidad kung ligtas ang pinakamahinang pamilya nito,” the <a href="https://www.abs-cbn.com/news/nation/2026/7/23/sara-duterte-popularity-doesn-t-give-her-free-pass-to-commit-crime-prosecutor-says-1149">vice president </a>added.</p><p>She took note of the recent disasters that struck several parts of the country, including the 7.8 magnitude Mindanao earthquake and Typhoon Inday, which both claimed lives and injured many.</p><p>The second-in-command said that while earthquakes and disastrous typhoons are uncontrollable, strengthening the community and infrastructure rests in the people’s hands.  </p><p>“Let us refuse to let tragedy be our only teacher.
