Millions of students are projected to report to class as School Year 2026-2027 officially opens. <em>Jonathan Cellona, ABS-CBN News</em> </span></span></span>MANILA — The Philippine National Police (PNP) on Tuesday expressed support for President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.&#x27;s directive to strengthen coordination among local government units, barangays, schools, and law enforcement to improve the safety and security of students.</div><p>The directive was among the President&#x27;s key messages during his fifth State of the Nation Address (SONA), where he called for closer collaboration between the Department of Education (DepEd), local governments, and the PNP in protecting schools.</p><p>&quot;Ang kaligtasan ng ating mga mag-aaral ay hindi lamang tungkulin ng kapulisan. Ito ay responsibilidad nating lahat,” PNP chief PGen. Jose Melencio Nartatez Jr. said in a statement.</p><p>“Patuloy kaming makikipagtulungan sa ating mga local government units, barangay officials, school administrators, mga guro, at mga magulang upang matiyak na ligtas ang ating mga paaralan at maagap ang pagtugon sa anumang concern na maaaring makaapekto sa ating mga kabataan,&quot; he added.</p><p>Nartatez said police units nationwide would continue enhancing police visibility around schools and implementing preventive measures to support a safe and orderly learning environment.</p><p>The PNP also welcomed the President&#x27;s announcement increasing the pension and subsistence allowance of retired uniformed personnel.</p><div><a class="fr-green fr-strong" href="https://www.abs-cbn.com/news/nation/2026/7/27/marcos-wants-more-protection-for-children-vs-toxicity-hate-culture-in-social-media-1722">Marcos wants more protection for children vs &#x27;toxicity, hate culture&#x27; in social media</a></div><p>Nartatez described the move as a recognition of the years of service and sacrifice of retired police officers and other uniformed personnel.</p><p>&quot;Malaking bagay po ito para sa ating mga retiradong uniformed personnel.
