Mark Demayo, ABS-CBN News/File</div>MANILA -- The Philippine Coast Guard&#x27;s (PCG) first participation in the Rim of the Pacific (RIMPAC) Exercise reflects its growing role in regional maritime security and highlights the strengthening partnership between the Philippines and the United States, a senior US Navy official said on Wednesday.During a virtual press briefing on RIMPAC 2026, Combined Task Force Commander Vice Admiral Jeffrey Jablon said the PCG made valuable contributions to the multinational exercise, particularly in maritime law enforcement, search and rescue, and humanitarian assistance and disaster response (HADR).&quot;The Philippine Coast Guard participated for the first time ever and really brought valuable capability to the exercise,&quot; Jablon told reporters.<div><a class="fr-green fr-strong" href="https://www.abs-cbn.com/news/nation/2026/6/19/navy-pcg-train-with-us-coast-guard-in-west-philippine-sea-1110">READ: Navy, PCG train with US Coast Guard in West Philippine Sea</a></div>According to Jablon, the PCG&#x27;s offshore patrol vessel (OPV) BRP Gabriela Silang worked closely with other participating forces during the sea phase of the exercise.&quot;Their participation reflects the growing role of coast guards in regional security and reinforces our shared commitment to a free and open Indo-Pacific,&quot; he said.Jablon added that the PCG&#x27;s participation also demonstrates the strong US-Philippines alliance.&quot;It highlights the strength of the US-Philippines partnership. Capable maritime partners are essential to sharing the burden of securing the global commons and preserving sovereignty across the Pacific,&quot; he said.The PCG also took part in HADR drills, which focused on improving coordination during natural disasters and other emergencies.The Philippines was among 30 countries that joined RIMPAC 2026, the world&#x27;s largest international maritime exercise, held in and around Hawaii.This year&#x27;s drills involved more than 30,000 personnel, 31 surface ships, five submarines, and over 190 aircraft.Participating forces carried out more than 500 maritime events, over 2,400 flight sorties, and around 5,000 training scenarios across maritime, air, amphibious, and cyber operations.The exercise also included live-fire sinking exercises, and tests of new technologies, including unmanned systems.RIMPAC 2026 was held under the theme &quot;Partners: Integrated and Prepared,&quot; highlighting the importance of interoperability and cooperation among allies and partners in maintaining a free and open Indo-Pacific.
