Noel Celis, Pool/AFP</span></span></span></div><p><strong>MANILA (2nd UPDATE) </strong>— The Bureau of Internal Revenue (BIR) on Thursday submitted Vice President Sara Duterte&#x27;s income tax records to the Senate impeachment court. </p><p>President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. authorized the submission of the tax records of Duterte, her husband Atty. Mans Carpio, and the corporations linked to the couple.</p><div><a href="https://www.abs-cbn.com/news/nation/2026/7/16/bir-needs-marcos-approval-before-release-of-duterte-s-records-ex-tax-chief-1457">BIR needs Marcos approval before release of Duterte&#x27;s records — ex-tax chief </a></div><p>Section 71 of the National Internal Revenue Code requires the approval of the president before any tax documents can be examined.</p><div><span class="fr-video fr-deletable fr-fvc fr-dvb fr-draggable" contenteditable="false" draggable="true"><iframe src="https://www.facebook.com/plugins/post.php?href=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.facebook.com%2FabscbnNEWS%2Fposts%2Fpfbid0yQKrF79voZVf5BZVT94HaNtE7xmFqDXRR8nSZ5zhCXq4Ro6RB3N2hhJTecPdZDf7l&amp;show_text=false&amp;width=500" width="500" height="328" style="border:none;overflow:hidden" scrolling="no" frameBorder="0" allowfullscreen="" class="fr-draggable"></iframe></span><br/></div><p>The submissions and other subpoenaed documents are being inventoried and processed first before the parties can get copies.</p><div><br/></div><div><strong>WHAT THE SENATE COURT SAID</strong></div><div><br/></div><p>The <a href="https://www.abs-cbn.com/news/nation/2026/7/20/impeachment-court-subpoenas-duterte-bank-records-1730">impeachment court subpoenaed Duterte’s tax, bank and Anti-Money Laundering Council (AMLC) records</a> after prosecutors argued these were necessary to determine whether she had amassed unexplained wealth disproportionate to her lawful income.</p><div><a href="https://www.abs-cbn.com/news/sara-duterte-impeachment-trial">Impeachment Trial of Sara Duterte </a></div><p>Trial presiding officer Francis Escudero, however, imposed limitations in the use of the documents when he granted the subpoena. </p><p>“The Court likewise holds that the requested records are sought to establish the Respondent&#x27;s financial baseline and capacity, and not to inquire into or prosecute alleged impeachable acts occurring outside the present Articles of Impeachment,” he said. </p><p>Escudero cited the precedent in the impeachment trial of Renato Corona, when statements of assets, liabilities, and net worth (SALNs) prior to his appointment as chief justice in 2010 were presented. </p><p>“Likewise evidence and testimony concerning properties and transactions before his appointment as Associate Justice were presented before the Court on March 13, 2012,&quot; Escudero noted. </p><p>&quot;Therefore, the production of records from 2007 to 2021 is therefore allowed and authorized strictly for purposes of establishing a comparative baseline.
