MANILA — President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. reaffirmed his commitment to boosting the country’s armed forces and protecting the Philippine territory and sovereignty during a visit with Filipino soldiers in charge of securing several features in the West Philippine Sea and the country’s northern borders.Marcos Jr. visited the Northern Luzon Command (NOLCOM) at Camp General Servillano A. Aquino in Tarlac City, Tarlac on Thursday, July 30 as part of his visit to the province.There, he received a briefing on the Command’s operational readiness and capabilities to protect the Philippines’ territory and maritime domain, according to the Presidential Communications Office.It added that the commander-in-chief “underscored the importance of further strengthening NOLCOM’s preparedness, interoperability and coordination with other government agencies and international partners to effectively address current and emerging national security challenges.”“He reaffirmed the Administration’s commitment to protecting the country’s territory, sovereignty and national interests while continuing to support Filipino soldiers’ welfare and capabilities,” it noted.The NOLCOM is a unified command of the AFP responsible for securing the Ilocos Region, Cordillera Administrative Region, Cagayan Valley, and Central Luzon, including Bajo de Masinloc or Scarborough Shoal and the Philippine Rise.Days prior to Marcos Jr’s visit, NOLCOM held a military engagement with United States officials to ‘reaffirm’ its enduring defense partnership.The two countries’ alliance, NOLCOM said, “continues to enhance interoperability, strengthen intelligence and information sharing, and improve the collective readiness of both forces in addressing evolving security challenges.”During NOLCOM&#x27;s 38th anniversary program last year, former AFP chief of staff General Romeo Brawner Jr. told his troops to extend their “sphere of operations” and prepare for future eventualities, which may include an emergency in Taiwan.
