MANILA - The wife of 77-year-old activist Vicente Ladlad and KAPATID spokesperson Fides Lim filed a petition for writ of habeas corpus before the Supreme Court on Friday for the release of her husband, citing humanitarian considerations and protection of fundamental rights. Ladlad is now almost eight years behind bars while his case remains pending, according to Lim. “Nag-file kami ngayong umaga ng petition for habeas corpus para mapalaya na siya dahil napaka-unjust ‘yung kanyang pagkakakulong. Aabot na siya ng walong taon sa tagal at saka sa paggapang ng kaso nito,” Lim said. Ladlad, identified as a consultant of the National Democratic Front of the Philippines, <a href="https://www.abs-cbn.com/news/11/11/18/wife-of-arrested-communist-leader-may-face-charges-pnp">was arrested</a> back in 2018 for illegal possession of firearms.His legal counsel Atty. Michael De Castro said Ladlad has been brought to the hospital multiple times for illnesses over the years.“Pinapahiwatig ng habeas corpus na ‘to, nawawalan na siya ng due process. Maliban pa doon, sakitin na siya. In fact, inatake na siya sa puso. Nagkaroon na siya ng sakit. Nadala na siya sa hospital nang several times sa walong taon na ito. Doon na ba siya mamamatay sa loob ng kulungan? Inosenteng tao ‘to ah. Hindi pa ‘to naco-convict kahit kailan,” De Castro told reporters. While under state custody, Ladlad suffered “multiple life-threatening emergencies”, such as Asthma-COPD Overlap Syndrome (ACOS) in acute exacerbation, COVID-19, pneumonia, tuberculosis, and severe hearing loss, according to the group KAPATID.De Castro also cited <a href="https://www.abs-cbn.com/news/nation/2025/10/24/enrile-acquitted-of-graft-in-pork-barrel-case-1019">the case of Juan Ponce Enrile</a> who was granted bail on humanitarian grounds.“So siguro panahon na, para makalaya siya, para pagbigyan siya at 77 years old na mamuhay naman siya nang katulad nating mga mamamayan. Kung puwede ito para kila Gigi Reyes, kung puwede ito para kila Juan Ponce Enrile, bakit hindi sa mga katulad natin? Bakit hindi puwede para kay Vic Ladlad?” De Castro asked.
