VANCOUVER, Canada — President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. said sanctions that China  imposed on Defense Secretary Gilbert Teodoro are &quot;very unhelpful&quot; in addressing tensions between the Philippines and China over the West Philippine Sea..Speaking to reporters in Vancouver, Marcos added that that the sanctions achieve &quot;very little.&quot; Last month, China&#x27;s Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced that Teodoro, his wife, and child are barred from the Chinese mainland, Hong Kong and Macau.Beijing also barred organizations and individuals in China from engaging with them, saying Teodoro had &quot;repeatedly made irresponsible remarks on China&quot; that harmed its &quot;legitimate interests&quot; and affected bilateral relations.China&#x27;s actions do not move the discussion between the Philippines and China regarding sovereign disputes, Marcos said, adding that they instead raise the level of tension.&quot;Cutting off another line of communication, which is through our defense ministries, I do not see how it will help that process that we&#x27;re trying to achieve to manage the tensions in the West Philippine Sea, to lessen the likelihood of something happening that will be a trigger for something worse,&quot; he said.<div><a href="https://www.abs-cbn.com/news/nation/2026/6/29/-no-rift-between-ph-china-despite-beijing-s-sanctions-rhetoric-vs-teodoro-palace-1533">&#x27;No rift&#x27; between PH, China despite Beijing&#x27;s sanctions, rhetoric vs Teodoro: Palace</a></div>Marcos also said he is concerned about how the next administrations will approach policies related to the South China Sea. &quot;If you&#x27;re asking me if I&#x27;m worried that the policy of the Philippines will change after I leave office, of course I am. Because it&#x27;s almost, not quite, but it&#x27;s almost an existential issue for us,&quot; he said.
