Ferdinand Marcos Jr. at the 68th Philippine Army Change of Command Ceremony at Fort Bonifacio in Taguig City on Tuesday, August 11, 2026. <em>Harlene Delgado, ABS-CBN News</em></span></span></span></div><p>MANILA -- President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. reminded the newly-appointed Philippine Army chief to ensure that the country’s soldiers can &quot;respond decisively wherever the mission requires&quot; and to uphold the Constitution.</p><p>Marcos Jr. led the 68th Philippine Army Change of Command Ceremony at Fort Bonifacio in Taguig City on Tuesday, August 11. </p><p>Lieutenant General Donald Gumiran is the new Commanding General of Philippine Army, succeeding Lieutenant General Antonio Nafarrete who is the new Chief of Staff of the Armed Forces of the Philippines.</p><div><a class="fr-green fr-strong" href="https://www.abs-cbn.com/news/nation/2026/7/22/new-afp-chief-nafarrete-vows-to-stand-our-ground-in-west-ph-sea-1100">READ: New AFP chief Nafarrete vows to ‘stand our ground’ in West PH Sea</a></div><p>Marcos Jr. expressed confidence in Gumiran in leading the Philippine Army, citing his extensive background in the frontlines including his stint as the head of the Western Mindanao Command and his education at the US Army War College.</p><p>&quot;Continue the mission, preserve the Army’s strong sense of duty and keep faith with our soldiers,&quot; he said in his speech.</p><p>The commander-in-chief also directed the new Army leader to &quot;build a force capable of securing the land domain, supporting joint operations, and contributing fully to defending our sovereignty and asserting our territorial integrity&quot; as the Army continues its transition towards external defense. </p><p>He also reminded them to ensure that &quot;our forces can deploy quickly, sustain operations, and respond decisively wherever the mission requires.&quot; </p><div><a class="fr-strong fr-green" href="https://www.abs-cbn.com/news/nation/2026/8/11/ndrrmc-19-dead-due-to-habagat-cyclones-0857">READ: 19 dead due to habagat, cyclones—NDRRMC</a></div><p>&quot;Especially now, as many of our communities confront heavy monsoon rains and other calamities. Uphold the Constitution. Protect the trust of the Filipino people,&quot; he added.</p><p>The commander-in-chief also assured the men and women of the Army that his administration will &quot;continue to invest in your capabilities and champion initiatives that safeguard your welfare and that of your families.&quot; </p><p>&quot;We will give you the tools to do the job, the support to do it well, and the confidence that the nation stands behind you,&quot; he said as he thanked members of the army for their courage and sacrifice.</p><div> </div>
