MANILA — There is more work to be done in flood control, says President Ferdinand Marcos Jr, who noted improvement in the Metro Manila situation during the onslaught of Habagat.Marcos inspected the mobile pump installed at the Alido Bridge in Las Piñas City early Tuesday, after heavy rains submerged many areas in Luzon.&quot;Mukhang nagkaroon naman ng epekto, hindi ganoon kalala ang pagbaha, medyo nabawasan,&quot; Marcos told reporters as he cited his order for the Department of Public Works and Highways to continue dredging of waterways.(It seems to have had an effect. We have a lot of work left to do.)He said there had been a moratorium on dredging for 12 years and resumption of operations has increased the carrying capacity of Metro Manila waterways. <div> </div><div>LAS PIÑAS SPILLWAY</div>Marcos Jr. also mentioned the need to complete a spillway in Las Piñas that will help water flow out to sea faster.&quot;That plan has been in the works for more than 10 years pero for whatever reason hindi natin nabuo at ngayon kailangan gagawin natin,&quot; he said, adding he has instructed DPWH Secretary Vince Dizon to review plans for the project.Noting the the huge volume of garbage that clogged waterways, the president appealed to local government units and to residents to ensure proper trash disposal.Marcos Jr. said one of the solutions to trash is the planned revival of the waste-to-energy program to convert garbage into electricity.<div><a href="https://www.abs-cbn.com/news/nation/2026/8/11/-garbage-crisis-cleanup-intensified-as-trash-overwhelms-redemptorist-channel-in-para-aque-0947">‘Garbage crisis’: Cleanup intensified as trash overwhelms Redemptorist channel in Parañaque </a></div>Flood control is one of the biggest issues the president is handling—starting with his whistleblowing revelations during his 2025 State of the Nation Address.His administration has repeatedly promised to go after those behind &quot;ghost&quot; and substandard flood control projects.As those efforts continue, Marcos Jr. said there will also be no letup in dredging and other projects to help ease flooding.&quot;Hindi natin titigilan hanggang matapos &#x27;yan,&quot; he said.(We will not stop until that problem is solved.)
