Jessie Cruzat, ABS-CBN News"/><span class="fr-inner" style="text-align:left">Clean-up operations at the Redemptorist Water Channel, August 11, 2026. <em>Jessie Cruzat, ABS-CBN News</em></span></span></span></div><p>MANILA -- When people hear &quot;Baclaran,&quot; the famous Redemptorist Church immediately comes to mind.</p><p>But after days of heavy rain brought by the southwest monsoon or habagat, another image has taken people&#x27;s attention — a water channel brimming with tons of garbage.</p><p>The Redemptorist Water Channel, which stretches for about a kilometer from Manila Bay, connects the cities of Parañaque and Pasay.</p><div><a class="fr-green fr-strong" href="https://www.abs-cbn.com/news/nation/2026/8/11/-garbage-crisis-cleanup-intensified-as-trash-overwhelms-redemptorist-channel-in-para-aque-0947">READ: Cleanup intensified as trash overwhelms Redemptorist channel in Parañaque</a></div><p>For Myrna Tinsay, a Parañaque resident and MMDA employee who is used to hauling garbage, seeing the channel in that state was painful.</p><p>She said she had seen the waterway when it was still clean.</p><p>&quot;Masakit kasi tingnan n&#x27;yo naman, sir, sobrang dumi. Hindi na magandang tingnan.Nasasaktan ho ako kasi nakikita ko &#x27;yong kalikasan natin ganito… Maraming naliligo diyan, hindi ganiyan karumi. Ngayon sobra na,&quot; said Tinsay.</p><p>June Lelis, 52, meanwhile, traveled from Manila to fish in the channel. He said he used to catch around half a kilo of tilapia within an hour.</p><p>But with the waterway filled with  garbage, there were no fish biting.</p><p>&quot;Kalikasan, pasensya ka na sa mga tao. Sa ginawa nilang tambak na basura. Sana pagbigyan mo ulit kami para maging malinis para makahuli ulit kami ng isda. Ngayon wala, zero. Baka umuwi na kami ng walang huli,&quot; he said. </p><div><a class="fr-green fr-strong" href="https://www.abs-cbn.com/news/nation/2026/8/9/para-aque-residents-endure-recurring-floods-seek-long-term-solutions-2305">READ: Parañaque residents endure recurring floods, seek long-term solutions</a></div><p>The Parañaque City Environment and Natural Resources Office said it is normal for garbage to be carried by waves into the channel from Manila Bay, but they did not expect the huge volume this time.</p><p>&quot;First time na nangyari ito na ganito kalala ang problema. Kung meron man kaming nakukuha dati doon sa dulo konti lang &#x27;yon hindi kamukha nito,&quot; said Parañaque CENRO head Engr. Bernie Amurao. </p><p>&quot;Nandiyan ang Manila, Bulacan, Pasay, Las Piñas, Bacoor, maraming dikit-dikit na lugar &#x27;yan. Wala akong masabi kung kanila galing &#x27;yan, ang importante nandiyan na &#x27;yan, pagtulong-tulungan na lang para malinis natin.&quot;</p><p>CENRO personnel waded through the dirty water just to speed up the hauling of the garbage.</p><p>MMDA trucks and DPWH floating backhoes have also been deployed to help remove the garbage.</p><p>Meanwhile, Public Works Secretary Vince Dizon said the situation has reached crisis levels.</p><p>&quot;Pinapakita lang talaga na grabe na ang sitwasyon ng basura natin. Ako sasabihin ko na na garbage-crisis na talaga ito,&quot; said Dizon. </p><p>&quot;Kailangan tuldukan na natin ito once and for all. Deka-dekada na ito at ang problema, padami na nang padami tayo dito. Padami nang padami ang basura. Never ending ito kung di natin aayusin.&quot;</p><p>Malacañang also said addressing problems involving garbage and waterways is now among the administration&#x27;s priorities.</p><p>&quot;Hindi ito ang nais natin.
