QC residents on flood control: 'Sana 'yung solusyon pang-matagalan, hindi higop-higop lang'

Through manual and machine-assisted operations, authorities continued working to mitigate flooding across several parts of Quezon City amid persistent rainfall brought by the southwest monsoon.Along Sto. Domingo Avenue, two Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) personnel manually cleared debris clogging the drainage system.As of 2:20 a.m. on Wednesday, August 19, vehicles could pass through the area after floodwaters—which had reached over three feet deep at around 1:00 a.m.—finally subsided.At the San Juan River along E. Rodriguez Avenue corner G. Araneta Avenue, pumping stations operated by the DPWH, the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority and the Quezon City Department of Engineering were activated simultaneously starting Tuesday evening, August 18.Separate pumping operations were also conducted along Doña Carmen Avenue in Barangay Commonwealth.The joint operations aimed to rapidly drain accumulated rainwater and prevent localized flooding.Residents living near the San Juan River expressed support for the measures, noting they provided immediate relief during heavy downpours.“Okay din naman po ‘yan para mawala ‘yung baha-baha rito. Kadalasan po kasi ‘pag malakas talaga ‘yung ulan, diretso taas talaga ang tubig. Kaya hindi maiwasan ‘yung pagbaha,” said resident Junrel Silvano.“Malaking tulong po ‘yan kasi pina-pump po nila papalabas ‘yung tubig sa Araneta diretso po sa pump,” added Alfredo Pondang.However, another resident emphasized that the government must prioritize sustainable, long-term flood mitigation over temporary measures.“Sana ‘yung solusyon diyan, ‘yung pang-matagalan, ‘yung tuloy-tuloy, hindi ‘yung higop-higop lang,” said Jen Laguarez.Gutter-deep flooding was also recorded along portions of G. Araneta Avenue.Meanwhile, three-foot-deep floodwaters were observed along N.S. Amoranto Sr. Street, between G. Araneta and Sto. Domingo Avenues, as of 3:00 a.m. Wednesday.
