Maria Tan, ABS-CBN News/File</div>MANILA —  China claimed it carried out military and coast guard drills near the Scarborough Shoal, according to a report by its state news agency on Saturday, August 1.&quot;This is a necessary action taken in light of the current situation in the [West Philippine Sea] and in response to the acts of certain countries within the region that have undermined regional peace and stability,&quot; the Chinese People&#x27;s Liberation Army (PLA) Southern Theater Command said in a reported statement.<div><a class="fr-green" href="https://www.abs-cbn.com/news/nation/2026/7/30/ph-seeks-extended-continental-shelf-in-west-philippine-sea-1730">PH seeks extended continental shelf in West Philippine Sea</a></div>International relations expert Renato de Castro said the drills were a clear show of force by China directed at both the Philippines and Taiwan, which is currently conducting a 10-day military exercise.“It’s a show of force pag ganyang military exercise iba na yan hindi na yan gray zone or ICAD.
