Handout/PSC</div>MANILA — Department of National Defense Secretary Gilbert &quot;Gibo&quot; Teodoro underscored the role of taekwondo in strengthening Philippines-South Korea relations and promoting discipline among Filipino youth during the 50th anniversary celebration of the Philippine Taekwondo Association (PTA) on Saturday.Speaking before members of the taekwondo community and guests, Teodoro said the growth of the PTA reflects the deepening &quot;relationship&quot; between the Philippines and South Korea, which has evolved from people-to-people exchanges to stronger defense cooperation between the two allied nations.<div><a class="fr-green fr-strong" href="https://www.abs-cbn.com/sports/othersports/2026/8/23/marcos-other-gov-t-officials-receive-honorary-dans-from-taekwondo-nsa-1803">READ: Marcos, other gov&#x27;t officials receive honorary Dans from taekwondo NSA</a></div>&quot;The growth of the PTA here in the Philippines mirrors the growth of the relationship between two countries and allies—Philippines and [South] Korea,&quot; Teodoro said during the celebration of the national sports association (NSA).&quot;I am in a privileged position to witness the strengthening of this relationship from people-to-people to our strongest implements of national power, which [is] our defense establishments,&quot; he added.Teodoro said he has witnessed firsthand how the relationship between the two countries has continued to flourish, describing taekwondo as one of its strongest foundations.He encouraged the continued promotion and expansion of the sport, particularly the values it instills, such as discipline, which he said society greatly needs today.&quot;I encourage it to be strengthened, continued, and spread,&quot; Teodoro said. &quot;I encourage the spread of taekwondo, particularly its values.&quot; The defense chief also emphasized the importance of guiding the youth through the principles taught by taekwondo, saying these shared values unite the community beyond the sport itself.&quot;And that&#x27;s why we&#x27;re all here now because we are united by a bond of discipline. These are values which society badly needs at this time, particularly to guide our youth,&quot; he concluded.
