MANILA — Department of Public Works and Highways Secretary Vince Dizon assured lawmakers during the House Committee on Appropriations budget hearing, Wednesday afternoon, that the agency will continue to maintain and improve flood control infrastructure in Marikina, including its critical pumping stations.The issue was raised by Marikina Second District Representative Miro Quimbo who sought Dizon’s commitment to ensure that the city’s two pumping stations remain operational and beneficial to residents.Quimbo initially sought for an investigation into the non operation of the Tumana and Iwahig pumping stations in the city, which spawned floods in Barangays Tumana and Malanday at the height of monsoon rains earlier this month.Dizon gave the assurance DPWH personnel would be held accountable if they failed, joking that even DPWH Director Jerry Fano, who is overseeing the facilities, would be included.<div><a href="https://www.abs-cbn.com/news/nation/2026/8/26/dpwh-seeks-p83-84-billion-for-locally-funded-flood-control-says-no-leadership-fund-in-2027-1538">DPWH seeks P83.84-B for locally-funded flood control, says no ‘leadership fund’ in 2027 budget</a></div>Dizon then clarified that the DPWH has a contingency measure in place, including a standby mobile pump that can immediately be deployed if one of the city’s pumping stations fails.“May naka-standby dyan na ready to go na mobile pump,” he said.Dizon added that he had already instructed DPWH Undersecretary Charles Calima to ensure the equipment could be deployed immediately when needed.“Oras mismo po darating po ’yung mobile pump natin para masiguro na tuloy-tuloy po ang pagbomba natin at hindi po mababaha ang area natin sa Tumana,” he saidRep. Babantayan po natin, babantayan ko po ’yan personally.”Quimbo said the drainage improvements would benefit not only Marikina but also neighboring areas such as Cainta and Antipolo.Dizon said the strategy is straightforward: protect communities from the river while ensuring floodwaters are quickly discharged back into it.“Sabi ko simple lang naman para mawala ang baha.
