<p>MANILA — The Department of the Interior and Local Government is procuring AI-enabled body-worn cameras for the Philippine National Police, according to Local Government Secretary Jonvic Remulla who said the police force has been using obsolete ones.</p><p>Remulla said this after Kabataan Party-list Rep. Renee Co asked the DILG about the operational status of the current body-worn camera system.</p><p>“Out of all the arrests made during the public assemblies and police operations in 2025 and 2026, ilang porsiyento po ang gumamit ng functional body-worn cameras (what percentage of those had functional body-worn cameras)?” Co asked. </p><p>The Supreme Court in 2021 <a href="https://www.abs-cbn.com/news/07/10/21/supreme-court-body-worn-cameras-huge-step-human-rights-abuses">required the use of body cameras during the service of warrants and</a>, whenever practicable, during warrantless arrests.</p><div><br/></div><div><strong>&#x27;ALREADY OBSOLETE&#x27;</strong></div><p>Remulla said the DILG has already ordered a &quot;more AI-capable and a more responsive and more fair&quot; body camera system.</p><p>He said that &quot;in this case...we were deficient in our capacity because the body-worn cameras that we have are already obsolete.&quot; </p><p>He said the old cameras had a resolution of 1 mega pixel and &quot;were totally, totally out of standard.”</p><div><a href="https://www.abs-cbn.com/news/nation/2026/8/27/dilg-eyes-home-inspection-for-gov-t-issued-firearms-1312"><strong>DILG wants police inspection of legal firearm owners’ homes after school shootings </strong></a> </div><p>Remulla told House members that the new body cam system &quot;has a superior lens and superior digital capacity so that it can be interpreted by AI and decoded by AI better.&quot; </p><p>The new body-worn cameras are seen to have an improved lens and digital capacity, which can be decoded better by artificial intelligence.</p><p>At present, he said, the PNP only has 2,000 units for 320,000 police officers.</p><p>The DILG is looking at completing the purchase within the year</p><div><a href="https://www.abs-cbn.com/news/regions/2026/8/20/dilg-zamboanga-school-shooter-exploited-gap-to-carry-out-attack-1329"><strong>DILG: Zamboanga school shooter exploited &#x27;gap&#x27; to carry out attack</strong></a></div>
