Workers cross the Guadalupe Bridge on foot from Makati to Mandaluyong City to reach the nearest busway station along EDSA on April 6, 2026. Earning a fixed nominal wage in the highly urbanized cities of Metro Manila,  a huge percentage of their earnings is consumed by daily transport expenses.
When the cost of a multi-ride commute (jeepney to MRT to bus) exceeds a certain threshold of a worker's daily budget, many switch to walking to save money. This shift follows a series of oil price hikes that has triggered price increases in basic goods, forcing Filipinos to tighten their belts amidst the oil crisis caused by the US-Israel-Iran conflict.

Jonathan Cellona, ABS-CBN News/File"/><span class="fr-inner" style="text-align:left">Workers cross the Guadalupe Bridge on foot from Makati to Mandaluyong City to reach the nearest busway station along EDSA on April 6, 2026. <em>Jonathan Cellona, ABS-CBN News/File</em></span></span></span></div><p>MANILA -- Four lawmakers are seeking a House inquiry into the effects on workers&#x27; actual wages of the injunction on the implementation of the recent wage hike order in Metro Manila.</p><p>Akbayan Representatives Percival Cendaña, Chel Diokno, and Dadah Kiram Ismula, as well as Dinagat Islands Representative Kaka Bag-ao filed House Resolution 1273, after a Pasig court issued an order temporarily halting the implementation of the P85 daily minimum wage increase in the NCR. </p><div><a class="fr-green fr-strong" href="https://www.abs-cbn.com/news/business/2026/7/30/pasig-court-grants-tro-halting-ncr-wage-hike-2218">READ: Pasig court grants TRO halting NCR wage hike</a></div><p>The increase was scheduled for implementation in two tranches: an initial P60/day upon effectivity of the wage order, and an additional P25/day effective on January 20, 2027.</p><p>During the House plenary session on Monday, Cendaña said the court&#x27;s temporary restraining order (TRO) sets a &quot;dangerous precedent&quot;.</p><p>&quot;Lubha pong nakababahala that this sets a very dangerous precedent that could eventually be a resort for forces that are enemies of the workers&#x27; welfare and rights, not just in NCR, but across the country. Isa po itong panganib sa maraming wage hike petitions na nakaamba sa iba&#x27;t ibang lugar sa Pilipinas. Hindi sapat na ma-lift ang TRO. Kinakailangan magkaroon ng matinding pronouncement na ito ay hindi dapat ginagawa sapagkat ito po ay iligal,&quot; he said.</p><p>&quot;We echo the call of the Senate for this bipartisan initiative.
