<p>MANILA — Public Works Secretary Vince Dizon inspected several pumping stations in Metro Manila after several days of heavy rain that caused flooding across the capital region.</p><p>At the Tumana Pumping Station in Marikina, accumulated garbage in the automatic trash rake became a problem, with waste being sucked into the pumps and causing damage.</p><p>&quot;We just have to deal with these situations but we have to find a way to lessen the trash,&quot; he said.</p><div><a href="https://www.abs-cbn.com/news/regions/2026/8/29/dpwh-to-build-temporary-steel-structure-to-reconnect-collapsed-aquino-bridge-in-tarlac-1600"><strong>DPWH to build temporary steel structure to reconnect collapsed Aquino Bridge in Tarlac </strong></a> </div><p>Dizon noted that the flooding was due to overwhelmed pumping systems that, he said, were &quot;not designed for a flood event of 50 years above return period.”</p><div><br/></div><div><strong>STOLEN POWER LINES</strong></div><p>Meanwhile, at the Sunog Apog Pumping Station in Tondo, Manila, the station failed to operate at the peak of heavy rainfall after electrical wires for the generator and its Meralco connection were allegedly stolen. </p><p>Barangay 183, Zone 16, District 2 Chairman, Joseph Lipasana informed the media that it was only reported to them on Saturday.</p><p>&quot;Kaya po, ang nangyari nung umulan, hindi po napatakbo tong pumping station, kaya bumaha po rito ng gabewang.”</p><p>(And so, when it rained, we could not operate the pumping station. That is why we had waist-high flooding.)</p><p>Dizon said the theft may have been an inside job.</p><p>DPWH is currently investigating the incident and checking CCTV footage from the facility.</p><div><a href="https://www.abs-cbn.com/news/nation/2026/8/20/marcos-floods-pumping-stations-1101"><strong>Marcos eyes 13 new pumping stations, new waste-to-energy projects by next year </strong></a> </div><p>With the pumping station non-operational, residents had to cope with waist-high floodwaters.</p><p>&quot;Nakapatong na lang kami sa upuan, yung mga apo ko nasa taas. Pinaakyat ko kasi, may mga sugat sila eh,&quot; resident Anet Canlas said.</p><p>(We were perched on chairs, my grandchildren were upstairs. I told them to go up because they had wounds that could infected.)</p><p>Dizon warned that those who steal or attempt to steal equipment essential to the operation of pumping facilities will face imprisonment if caught.</p>
