MANILA — The Department of Justice said it has secured the conviction of two Chinese nationals over the importation of 240 kilograms of shabu found hidden in plastic teabags.In the decision of the Pasay City Regional Trial Court Branch 116 dated August 25, 2026, Chinese nationals Jason Ang Y Tan and James Soriano Y Ong were sentenced to suffer the penalty of life imprisonment and to pay a fine of P2 million each for violating Section 4 Article II of Republic Act No. 9165 or the Importation of Dangerous Drugs and/or Controlled Precursors and Essential Chemicals.The DOJ noted that court records indicated that both accused were recipients of a shipment of workbench tables from Malaysia, which arrived at the Philippine Skylander Incorporated (PSI) International Cargo Terminal at the NAIA Complex in Pasay City in 2020.Upon examination of the shipment by the Bureau of Customs (BOC), suspicious substance concealed in 12 plastic tea bags were discovered inside the package and was later determined to be shabu.The two Chinese nationals were arrested after receiving the contraband in an entrapment operation led by the Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency based on the report from the BOC and a tip from a consignee set to deliver the shipment to Cabanatuan City.The DOJ noted that the court ruled that the prosecution was able to prove beyond reasonable doubt the commission of the crime of illegal drug importation, conspiracy between the accused and the integrity of the chain of custody in the handling of illicit drugs through clear and convincing evidence.&quot;May this serve as a warning to the world that the Philippines is no haven for illegal drugs, especially in this Bagong Pilipinas era where the rule of law prevails at all times,&quot; Justice Secretary Fredderick Vida said in a statement.
