<p>MANILA &mdash; The Department of Migrant Workers on Friday extended sympathies to the families of two Filipino seafarers who were killed after the Saudi-flagged crude oil tanker M/V SIDR came under attack while attempting to cross the Strait of Hormuz on August 31.&nbsp;</p><p>The agency vowed to extend all assistance and cooperation to the victims&rsquo; kin.</p><p>&ldquo;Alam natin na ang pamilya ay dumaranas ngayon ng traumatic experience dahil sa balita na kanilang natanggap sa &lsquo;di inaasahang pagkasawi sa kanilang mahal sa buhay,&rdquo; Undersecretary Bernard Olalia said in a phone interview with state-run media PTV.&nbsp;</p><div><a href="https://www.abs-cbn.com/news/world/2026/9/2/two-filipinos-killed-in-attack-on-saudi-oil-tanker-in-hormuz-shipping-firm-1702"><strong>2 Filipino seafarers killed in oil tanker attack near Strait of Hormuz&mdash;DMW</strong></a></div><p>&ldquo;Sa ngayon, tinutulungan po natin sila. Sa katunayan po, binisita mismo ng ating secretary of the Department of Migrant Workers ang pamilya kahapon sa Laguna, at ngayon ay nasa Cebu naman siya,&rdquo; he added. &nbsp;</p><p>Olalia said they were verifying the identities and processing the repatriation of the remains.</p><p>&ldquo;Sa ngayon, ang pamilya ay hindi interesado doon eh [benefits]. &nbsp;Ayaw nilang pag-usapan &lsquo;yun. Ang interested sila, malaman &lsquo;yung tunay na pangyayari, ano ba talaga ang nangyari. Pangalawa, kailan maipaparating &lsquo;yung remains. Kasi ngayon din, pinag-uusapan namin kung sila nga ba talaga &lsquo;yung identity nung kanilang kamag-anak. &lsquo;Yun ang importante,&rdquo; he said.&nbsp;</p><p>Meanwhile, 14 other Filipino crew members were in a safe location and would be repatriated home as soon as possible, according to Olalia.</p><p>&ldquo;&lsquo;Yung 14 na kasama nung dalawang namatay nating kababayang seafarers ay nasa ligtas na lugar na at nasa hotel na po sila. At tayo po ay nag-aasikaso mismo,&rdquo; the DMW official said.&nbsp;</p><p>The agency&rsquo;s ongoing investigation includes whether the Filipino seafarers expressed refusal to sail to the Hormuz Strait. It noted that manning agencies cannot impose retaliatory acts against seafarers who refuse to sail to high-risk areas. &nbsp;&nbsp;</p><div><a href="https://www.abs-cbn.com/news/nation/2026/9/3/family-of-seafarer-killed-near-strait-of-hormuz-demands-answers-swift-repatriation-0759"><strong>Family of seafarer killed near Strait of Hormuz demands answers, swift repatriation&nbsp;</strong></a></div><p>Olalia said sanctions would be imposed against the concerned manning agency if proven that it violated policies on seafarer&rsquo;s right to refuse to sail.</p><p>&ldquo;Sisiguraduhin ng Department of Migrant Workers na may karampatang parusa kapag napatunayan natin na hindi sinunod iyong mga polisiya na iyan.
