<p>MANILA &mdash; Online and gaming platforms must also help in ensuring children&rsquo;s digital safety as parents cannot take on this responsibility alone, according to Council for the Welfare of Children (CWC) Undersecretary Angelo Tapales.</p><p>For Tapales, platforms must be made safe.</p><p>The CWC also favors regulating platforms over a &ldquo;blanket banning,&rdquo; as the agency pushes to boost children&rsquo;s life skills and resilience. </p><p>&ldquo;We are also for regulation. Hindi rin po kami blanket banning kasi sabi ko nga, if we eliminate the vulnerability, the drivers po which makes our children susceptible to grooming, to these malign influences, hindi po natin sila kailangan bantayan kasi 24/7. And we cannot do that. That&rsquo;s why we&rsquo;re pushing for life skills, resilience,&rdquo; Tapales said during a forum on Friday about online violence and child exploitation.</p><p>Vulnerabilities leave children susceptible to grooming, according to the CWC official.</p><p>Tapales added children&rsquo;s safety should not depend on parents&rsquo; ability to navigate their platforms. &ldquo;Let us not forget that these people online prey on the vulnerability of children&hellip; The parents cannot do it alone&hellip; Some parents are more busy than others. Some are more neglectful than others,&rdquo; Tapales said. &ldquo;The platforms should also help. Hindi kaya ng parents lang... So for social media platforms, gaming platforms, other internet platforms, aside from, you know, making sure that the family&rsquo;s strong, the platforms should also be safe, private by design, the best interest of the children. Kailangan po talaga magtulungan,&rdquo; Tapales added.</p><div><br></div><div><strong>&lsquo;IT&rsquo;S ABOUT RESPONSIBLE GUN OWNERSHIP&rsquo;</strong></div><p>P/Lt. Col. Ayn Natuel of the Philippine National Police Women and Children Protection Center (WCPC) stressed the importance of responsible gun ownership in keeping the youth safe.</p><p>Children may be unable to differentiate a toy gun from a real gun, Natuel said.</p><p>Weapons belonging to law enforcement officers were used in the Tacloban and Zamboanga school shootings. &ldquo;We should be responsible also na itong gun na &lsquo;to is to protect us&ndash;not to harm, especially the children. So hanggang naging police ako, or hanggang sa pag-retire niya, hindi ko po nakita &lsquo;yung firearm.
