Maria Tan, ABS-CBN News/File</div>MANILA -- Philippine Cardinal Luis Antonio Tagle mourned on Sunday the death of his father, a profound figure in the life of the top Filipino church official and who taught him to &quot;live for others.&quot;The Archdiocese of Manila, which Tagle led for nearly a decade before he was called to head the Vatican&#39;s evangelization office in 2019, announced the passing of Manuel Tagle Sr. He was 96.&nbsp;&quot;As we commend his soul to the loving mercy of God,&quot; the archdiocese wrote on social media, &quot;we humbly ask everyone to join us in prayer for the repose of his soul and for comfort and strength for his beloved family, relatives, friends, and all those who mourn his passing.&quot;Born to devoutly Catholic parents, the cardinal reflected on his upbringing during a November 2025 interview on ANC&#39;s &quot;Beyond the Exchange.&quot;<div><a class="fr-green" href="https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=HHKSEb9SH_U">WATCH: Cardinal Tagle talks about family, growing up in humble Imus town</a></div>&nbsp;He recalled seeing early on from his late father and his mother the meaning of selfless service.&quot;My parents really showed us, not through words&hellip; that every effort is not for themselves,&quot; Tagle said. &quot;It [was] not to gain any honor.&quot;&quot;Tatay Maning&quot; as he was called, was married to Milagros Gokim, a Chinese-Filipino.
