Handout/MDRRMO Pitogo"/><span class="fr-inner" style="text-align:left">Five people were killed after a large buli tree fell on their house as Typhoon Ramil battered Barangay Kawayanin, Pitogo in Quezon Province, October 19, 2025. <em>Handout/MDRRMO Pitogo</em></span></span></span></div><p>MANILA -- Five members of a family, including two young children, were killed after a large buli tree fell onto their nipa hut in Barangay Kawayanin, Pitogo, Quezon Province on Sunday morning as Typhoon Ramil battered the area. </p><p>A report from the Pitogo Municipal Police Station identified the victims as Alvin Peña, 35; his wife Jean Andrea Peña, 35, a barangay councilor; their two children, aged 11 and 2; and the children’s grandfather, Alberto Bueno, 67. </p><p>The couple’s eldest child, a 17-year-old, survived the tragedy. </p><p>According to Jobert Bueno, his nephew told him that the tree suddenly crashed down on their house around 5 a.m. amid strong winds brought by the storm.</p><div><a href="https://www.abs-cbn.com/news/weather-traffic/2025/10/19/ramil-now-over-manila-bay-signal-no-2-up-over-parts-of-metro-manila-1159"><strong>Ramil now over Manila Bay; Signal No. 2 up over parts of Metro Manila</strong></a></div><p>“Na-shock siya, biglang bumagsak paglagatik po noon  at biglang bumagsak ang puno &#x27;yun nga po napasigaw na lang siya &#x27;Papa, Papa Bert,&#x27; sabay hila niya kay Papa Bert pero wala na rin, natamaan na sa ulo. Basag na po bungo,” recounted Jobert.</p><p>Alberto and his 11-year-old grandchild were sleeping side by side when the tree fell, while the couple and their youngest child were in another room. </p><p>The victims sustained fatal head injuries, rendering them almost unrecognizable.</p><p>The buli tree that fell was so massive that it would take two people to fully wrap their arms around it. Jobert said his brother-in-law had previously tried to burn the base of the buli tree, hoping to kill it so it wouldn’t fall on their house. </p><p>The partial burning may have weakened the trunk.</p><div><a href="https://www.abs-cbn.com/news/weather-traffic/2025/10/18/storm-ramil-makes-landfall-over-sorsogon-1807"><strong>Storm Ramil makes landfall over Sorsogon</strong></a></div><p>“Ay parang hindi naputol eh nabulok na lang yung pagkakasunog nila  doon, humabagat po kasi, ang inaasahan po kasi ng kapatid ko  ang hangin pababa  ay kaya po noong humabagat  bumagsak po sa kanila,” he said. </p><p>Jobert said he still couldn’t believe that in just a moment, he lost five loved ones in such a tragic way. </p><p>“Sobrang sakit po kasi lima yung nawala sa akin. Sinasabihan ko nga yung pamangkin ko lakasan ang loob  kasi ikaw na lang mag-isa talaga. Andito  naman kami mga tito at tita  mo na aagapay na lang sa iyo,” Jobert said.</p><p>The couple had planned to celebrate their eldest child’s 18th birthday on October 30.</p><p>“Masakit po sa amin kasi balak pa naman namin magkita-kita sa a-trenta  para sa birthday ng pamangkin ko  18 years old,Eh sa sementeryo na lang po ulit kami magkikita-kita para magbatian, ano pang paghahanda kapag ganiyan na lima ang nawala sa iyong pamilya?” Jobert said in tears. </p><p>The local government of Pitogo has already provided initial assistance for the wake of the victims.</p><div><br/></div><div><span class="fr-video fr-deletable fr-fvc fr-dvb fr-draggable" contenteditable="false" draggable="true"><iframe width="640" height="360" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/yvDFZKUpQ5Y?&amp;wmode=opaque&amp;rel=0" frameBorder="0" allowfullscreen="" class="fr-draggable"></iframe></span> </div>
