MANILA — The Piggatan Bridge in Alcala, Cagayan collapsed Monday afternoon after 3 heavy trucks weighing approximately 50 tons each passed through it at the same time, the public works chief said Tuesday.“Initial report merong 3 truck na sabay sabay tumawid sa bridge na iyan. Nakita naman natin sa mga picture na punong-puno ‘yung mga truck at medyo malalaki. Ang estimate ay 50 tons per truck,” Public Works Secretary Vince Dizon said in a DZMM interview.A separate interview with Cagayan PDRRMO head Ruelie Rapsing confirmed the bridge has an 18-ton load limit, with signages put up before entering the bridge. DPWH engineers are now checking the information, Dizon said, adding that the bridge is already 45 years old and may need retrofitting. Repair of the bridge could take years, he added.The DPWH chief said he needs to speak with the local and provincial government to ensure that bridges are not overloaded by passing trucks. He said that after building the structure, traffic management for a bridge is turned over by the department to the LGU.“Hindi natin alam na merong napkalalalaking truck na dumadaan sa tulay na di kakakayanin ‘yung bigat lalo na kung sabay sabay tumawid,” he said.Authorities earlier said 7 injured individuals have been brought to hospitals in Alcala and Gattaran due to the bridge collapse.Personnel from the Cagayan Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office and Bureau of Fire Protection arrived to manage the traffic in the area.Heavy vehicles are advised to take the alternate route: Jct. Gattaran - Cumao - Capissayan - Sta. Margarita Bolos Point Road to Baybayog - Baggao - Sta. Margarita Road.Light vehicles may traverse Piggatan - Maraburab Barangay Road.
